Bravo to gspm, who really makes this whole thing worthwhile with the great weekly standings and various tables. As for me, I suspect I've hit the highest heights I can and will hit in this competition. I am awed by squealy's 667th place finish, but how much cooler to have been 666, eh? I would point out that squealy is in another league in which he finished 15th!!! That is some serious fantasy footballing going on in that league, my friends. I will take solace in the fact that I once again have taken the non-Brit, non-Commonwealth trophy (and the Commonwealth part can actually come out this year), and, more importantly, that I have intrafamilial bragging rights, as I played Chelsea to my brother-in-law's (and bitter rival's) Liverpool. Have fun in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League next year, lawn_wrangler.

Wow, thanks for the extra summary. The constant and constantly great updates make it worth suffering through the frustration of yet another sport I'm a mediocre roto player in. Though it beats being an awful one like I was last year.

Thanks for all your hard work this year, gspm. Terrific job with the stats and tables. See all you guys next season. Unlike Derby County.

Thank you, gspm. Your work here is done. Until August.

See all you guys next season. Unlike Derby County. owlhouse -- at least squealy's deal with the devil to trade fantasy glory for relegation of the team he supports worked out. What's your excuse? Didn't read the fine print?

Thanks for the effort, gspm.

I used up my deal with the devil in 1971-72 and 1974-75. Although I'm not sure the flared denims and tie-dyed t-shirt were much of a trade, but they looked good at the time.

See all you guys next season. Unlike Derby County. I don't know. if someone offered me £60 million to get the tar kicked out of me 38 times this past winter, I dare say I'd consider it.

Is anyone even playing the Fantasy Champion's League anymore other than me?

I'm in there, trox.

I was just hoping that a potential victory wasn't entirely hollow!
posted by trox at 02:40 PM on May 20, 2008
Not entirely. Just remember, you're being tailed by the guy who finished 18th in the league table so like the 'pool, I'm crap in the league and decent in Europe. Check this out. Makelele slipped. My ass.

Ouch. Hey Claude, Ashely USED to play for Arsenal, not anymore.
posted by trox at 02:56 PM on May 20, 2008
I'm there too trox. Not that you can tell.
posted by yerfatma at 07:42 PM on May 20, 2008
I'm still in, trox. Oh, and I'm sorry about taking away your potential top five finish in the EPL league. (Insert sarcastic/evil laugh here) Thanks gspm, I really do enjoy the league and nice work squealy! Next year, I'm gonna Makelele all your asses. Oooh, I'm sure they'll be something for the Euro...right?
posted by tselson at 10:44 PM on May 20, 2008
they'll...wtf?

I think you meant there'll. heh.

I've had nothing but 6th place form for quite a while now anyway.

Problem with a Euro fantasy league is that neither UEFA, Yahoo nor the Premier League site have publicity rights to all the players, we ran into this issue with the World Cup two summers ago. Maybe a two stage competition similar to what we do for the playoffs? First stage is the group round and then second stage the knockouts?
posted by billsaysthis at 10:28 PM on May 21, 2008
Soccernet seems to have most of the Euro players (as I was browsing away today). Maybe someone with more in-depth knowledge could take a gander.
posted by trox at 10:53 PM on May 21, 2008
What about a confidence pool for Euro? It worked quite well for the last World Cup. And, apropos of nothing, I just got back from the Sydney Football Stadium, where Australia played Ghana in a friendly - we have WC qualifiers against Iraq, Qatar and China over the next month. Wouldn't you know it, but Mile Sterjovski of Derby County got the winner for Australia, then promptly got himself sent off. The curse of the Rams.

After owning Oceania, I'm curious to see how your Aussies do in the Asian competitions, Owlie. Rooting for you of course but this is, as the cliche goes, a whole 'nother level.
posted by billsaysthis at 12:05 PM on May 26, 2008
We are already developing a reputation as the England of Asia. At last year's Asian Cup - a struggle to get out of the group stages, followed by elimination in the quarter finals on penalties.

gspm, thanks for your bonus coverage. It remains my favorite feature of spofi. The form and recent overall tables are truly awesome.

Yeah, maybe the sumup and the end of next year might be even one better (the external summary page, that is) given that Excel 2007 has some "conditional cell color" functionality that integrates the sort of thing I'd been doing with more labour intensive methods. I'd probably upgrade in the next year. And with the spreadsheet to lockerroom updating somewhat streamlined (though I bet it could be even more automatic) there is always room to squeeze out a bit more from the data. Gotta make it better for next year. In other news... combining the web's version of chocolate and peanut butter together (lists plus video) the 101 greatest goals of the last year.
