The playoff-bound teams all made big statements this week, sitting their opponents down and making convincing arguments as to why exactly they are considered playoff teams. Except for Calgary, which is in the playoffs mainly because Edmonton has been worse.

In our standings, MrFrisby sat everyone down and explained exactly how he manages to score an average of five points a week. Or if he didn't, I wish he would.

Lots of jostling for playoff position this week. Woo! WEEK 18 B.C. @ Hamilton (Friday, October 26) Keep your eye on the newswire for this one. B.C. can clinch first place with a win, but how badly do they need to rest their oft-injured starters? Saskatchewan @ Edmonton (Friday, October 26) Saskatchewan's still in the running for first place in the West—at least, until B.C. notches another win. Winnipeg @ Toronto (Saturday, October 27) This is for the marbles. Toronto's won five straight, and a sixth this weekend would put them in first place in the East. I'm going to this game and you should be too. Montreal @ Calgary (Saturday, October 27) With these two teams seemingly locked into third place in their respective divisions, this game is almost meaningless. Almost, but not quite: if Montreal goes 0-2 to end the season, and Edmonton goes 2-0, Edmonton crosses over. Unlikely, but still possible! Good luck!

My picks: BC by 17 Edmonton by 3 Toronto by 8 Calgary by 14 Is the seventh time a charm? I've never picked Edmonton as a winner and been right. Let's see if they can break the curse this week. A lame chart of my CFL prediction failure can be found here.

After my ill-chosen remarks about Winnipeg, the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce sent an extraordinary rendition team around. I was placed in a sack and spirited away to a special Canadian re-education camp. BC by 12. Deep beneath the offices of Film Canada. There I was drugged, my eyes stapled open and forced to watch independent cinema. Edmonton by 11. A bit like that scene in A Clockwork Orange. Except the films weren't Nazi atrocities but I Heard The Mermaids Singing, Jesus of Montreal and Salmonberries. Toronto by 9. And instead of Beethoven, the music was by Arcade Fire. I'm cured, all right. Montreal by 3. Now when anyone mentions Canada, I immediately think of loneliness, death and naked lesbians.

With the spread at 12.5 in favor of the Lions, I think I'll be takin' the Tabbies on PointSpread ... but for pick 'em purposes ... I think that BC will still walk away with the W. BC by 5. It sure be nice if the EE could get a win to close out the home season, but it's a sinkin' ship with Maciocia at the helm ... and the Rider Nation will be out in full-force anyway ... it's not like any stadium I've seen is an "away" stadium for the Riders, not even Commonwealth. Especially Commonwealth. Saskatchewan by 14. Yeah yeah yeah, the Argos are the hottest thing goin' ... but as long as this doesn't come down to a kickin' duel, then the Bombers "should" be able to show 'em who's boss in the east. Winnie by 8. Ack, this hurts to type ... but the Stamps should have no trouble handlin' les Alouettes on home turf this weekend. Calgary by 21.
