Spofi EPL FFL: Week 16. Managing fixture decongestion.

EnFuego was best last week, worst this week. Wow. I might have made it back to first but was helped a bit by ATL United using Lampard as captain even though he didn't play. Likely(?) second choice Henry didn't play either but possibly third choice Gerrard had 11 pts, and doubling that would have been enough to keep ATL United in top spot. These things are, of course, dead easy to predict after the fact. Squads with their highest scoring week yet: Range Park Queens, My Hair Is So Bangin, Arrowwood United, Tunbridge Turtles, Zizou Headbutters Squad with their lowest scoring week yet: EnFuego Squads with their highest weekly ranking yet: Arrowwood United (1) Tunbridge Turtles (3) Squads with their lowest weekly ranking yet: The Lawn Wranglers (32), EnFuego (36) Bubbling up, highest overall placing yet: PunksInTheBeerlight A consistent climb from 22nd in week 9 and now in 11th. Slipping down, sound the alarm, lowest overall placing yet: EnFuego, The Magyars, Cutters IV And oops, SpoFi avg was 46.3 this week and 38.0 last week.

Why can't I join this league? I'd be up there near the top!

'Round about Saturday I had 60 points and no one was close to me. Thankfully I got out of the passing lane before I was run over.

This past week was murder for squad selection. I knew Henry wasn't playing but missed Lampard and Terry sitting out. I hope to catch up again this weekend, even though Henry is out again.

What's up with Barry's suspension? Too many yellow cards? I only ask because it's gonna cripple yerfatma this week. He's been at the front of that gravy train.

Salmacis, I'm running it, but it would require a major spreadsheet overhaul to add another player. And I am suitably disinclined to add you if you'd be up near the top! No, of course not. I will sort it out over the holidays. You've been a regular part of the pool the last years so I know you aren't some random punter. So, if you post a link to your team profile I can get your gameweek history to try and add in all your old info so that I don't have a big mostly empty rows all over the place. And then work on updating the macros that do all the heavy lifting for me.

gspm, I don't know why you can't join - don't you have the league number and passcode? In other news, I got my highest score, 2nd highest of the week ... and still dropped one spot in the league. Last week, I scored crap points and moved up a spot. I'm beginning to see the madness to this method...

Aye, the only way to win... is to lose! So go on out there, drop all your starters, and Let's! Start! SUCKING! You think he bought it?

Let's! Start! SUCKING! chico, I'm not sure how to put this...

I think it's been mentioned before, but how do I make my IP address look like it's from the UK so I can watch the BBC feeds? Do I put a u in each of the octets?

gspm, I don't know why you can't join - don't you have the league number and passcode? What do you mean I can't join. I'm in first place?! Salmacis can join, once I reopen the league. The commish has the ability to shut the league to new entries which I did after day 1 of the season. So I will reopen it for Salmacis, I just want to get my spreadsheet in order because it is not a trivial matter to add a new member to the spreadsheet. In other new, from the "You Must Be Kidding Me" File, Matthew Taylor's 091206 entry.

Great goal from Taylor. In fact this weekend was full of great goals.

Essien's goal today has to be on the list. Shawn Wright-Phillips' goal... wait a sec.. oh yeah, SWP showed why he's been practically glued to the Stamford Bridge wood this season. If Mourinho'd left Geremi on the field the Blues would likely have scored a second, winning goal.

Oh, I see, gspm. I did mean salmacis. Thanks for explaining about the lockout. The Chelsea v Arsenal match was technically excellent. And the goals were beautiful to behold; Arsenal's was beautiful for its patient and close construction, while Chelsea's was beautiful in it's finish (I loves me the close passing, and I loves me the long range swerving shots).

Listen, if it causes you a problem, then don't worry about it. If it was just a case of opening the league up again, that's one thing, but I don't want to inconvenience you.

I toploaded with Chelski & Arse players this week. Yeah, their match was riveting -- I was late for band rehearsal because the second half just did not let up -- but the poolie in me was less than gruntled. Those bastards better deliver in their second games or I'm screwed. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

I bet Howard swore at that goal.

Those bastards better deliver in their second games or I'm screwed. I second that emotion. Not to mention I picked the wrong guy for the armband, so far.

I'm doing pretty damn good so far, so I can't really complain. Altho, a different pick for captain would've made this a BLOODY good week. Well, there's still one more match. Go ahead, Drogba, get a hattrick. Also, where did Matt Taylor come from all of a sudden? Was he injured at some point? He not only came out of nowhere, he's the fookin' top defender in the fantasy league.

Four goals against Wigan, four more against Fulham, a week to rest... Charlton sitting bottom. Oh yeah!

What a crap week so far. Still, glancing at the Championship, the important thing to note is that Derby are in one of the automatic promotion places. One part of me says YEAH!, while the other part worries about our 50 million quid debt and maybe this is just too soon... However our usual Christmas/New Year slump will take care of that.
posted by owlhouse at 03:12 PM on December 11, 2006
He not only came out of nowhere, he's the fookin' top defender in the fantasy league. Scoring 29 points in two gameweeks will do that for you. Taylor's always had the potential to score big as he takes free-kicks and corners as well as scoring the occasional screamer from open play. However he failed to impress earlier this season and might even have been dropped completely now but for the injury to Stefanovic. I think it's fair to say he's cemented his place for the time being though.

I've often been tempted to buy Taylor, in fact, I think I did last season, and he disappeared without trace. I took the inspired decision to make Carragher my captain on Friday, reasoning that Arse and Chelsea would probably cancel each other out, then on Saturday morning decided to give it back to Lampard. I hate this game.
posted by Fat Buddha at 10:39 AM on December 12, 2006
FB, that hurts. Because Portsmouth starts so many defenders Taylor is basically playing midfield, right?
posted by garfield at 10:52 AM on December 12, 2006
Don't you want defenders playing out of position because they earn more per dollar/pound?
posted by yerfatma at 11:50 AM on December 12, 2006
Yes, yerfatma. But that only helps if your team isn't leaking defensively. Defenders who play in midfield (or, heaven forbid, offence) get a "double-bonus" when they score or get an assist IF their defensive cohorts keep the clean sheet. Straight-out midfielders or strikers don't get that benefit. Here's the breakdown: If a player scores, how many points does he get? - Goalie/Defender 6, Midfielder 5, Striker 4 (Oh, yes...) If a player has a clean sheet, how many points does he get? - Goalie/Defender 4, Midfielder 1

Wait a sec, has a goalie ever scored? I've seen it happen in hockey, but a football pitch has a bit more distance to it.
posted by yerfatma at 06:15 AM on December 13, 2006
Jose Chilavert was your man, Yerfatma, but he's since been replaced by Rogerio Ceni. Ceni has 68 goals now. If you mean direct from a goal kick then, yes, that's happened too. Earlier this year Columbian keeper Luis Martinez scored with a clearance in a friendly against Poland.

But . . . how? You have like 15 minutes to work out the angle on the incoming missile. Even if you fell down twice you should be ok. On edit: well, that answers that.

Here's another question I have for everyone more familiar with the facts than me. How does transferring a player between teams in EPL or European leagues differ at all from what's currently going on in MLB with Matsuzaka and the Red Sox? For example, if Barcelona transfers Ronaldhino to an EPL team (for let's say 51.1M). Does that team have to then negotiate a contract with him? I can't figure out how this MLB thing is so screwed up.

For example, if Barcelona transfers Ronaldhino to an EPL team (for let's say 51.1M). Does that team have to then negotiate a contract with him? YG...The vast majority of the time, yes, his new team has to negotiate a new contract. I suppose there are instances where the new team picks up the players old contract, but I don't know of any. Many of the top players are also now receiving a % of the transfer fee...I think around 10% is becoming the norm. In many ways, it's slave trade of the highest order!
posted by Texan_lost_in_NY at 12:06 PM on December 13, 2006
I believe that if the player doesn't request a transfer then he always receives a percentage of the transfer amount, dependent on how long he has been with his team and/or any stipulations in his contract. 10% is usually the minimum. This is why if a player wants to move, his team will often force him to hand in a written transfer request, as then this percentage goes to the club instead.

I can't believe the Wigsters held off Arsenal for over 90 minutes and then let Adebayor get in wide open against Kirkland and score. Wigan sucks.

Yeah. I was hoping for a Baines clean sheet and a Camara score. But, at least Drogba scored. I got 78 - looks like my highest score ever, and the week's 3rd highest. I'm back in business.

The EPL schedule had a 6 games playing twice this week and a few teams (notably, Chelsea) not playing at all. Teams were affected accordingly.
