Spofi EPL FFL: Week 4 Update. Blackburn's keeper Friedel was the man to have this week - two penalty stops in the same match made him the highest scoring player on the board by a large margin. So, who among us benefited?

Squealy has the top gameweek for the 2nd time in the last 3 weeks. He is back on his usual form and holds top spot for the 3rd straight week. Old timers may remember him holding down top spot for 22 straight weeks to end last year. My blazing start has been gameweeks of 1st, 19th, 2nd, 2nd. Something is going right. And I am taking the early lead in the Tinkerman sweepstakes. 5 transfers and 8 points sacrificed so far. Yukon conjures up a magic week from the bottom reaches of the table.

So, who among us benefited? Looks like everyone who scored 60 points or higher and wc2002. So that's 3 penalties saved by Friedel in 4 games. Anyone giving him the armband at home to Citeh?

posted by Texan_lost_in_NY at 09:43 PM on September 11, 2006

I'm still resisting the urge to tinker. I still believe my team will come good. Remind me again of this baseless optimism in a few weeks.

Damnit, Yukon. The Battle of Southern New Hampshire rages on.

Anyone giving him the armband at home to Citeh? I tell you what, with Citeh's dreadful away goal-scoring record over the last two seasons that could be worth a shout. Don't forget to play your wildcards everybody. Then when I've got mine left when the shit hits the fan at the end of the season you'll all be screwed. Hehe.

I freely admit I only have the vaguest idea what I'm doing here, and if it weren't for having lucked out by picking Zamora & Bent, I'd be deep in the second division. Friedel, though, has been on fire, and squealy now has a target on his back.

posted by chicobangs at 09:05 AM on September 12, 2006

Moved six slots up, even with only 10 players "on the pitch" this week. I'm lovin' me some Friedel. I don't know where his points are coming from. Of course, I understand the point system. It's just funny that the keeper in the bottom team in the league is also the top keeper in our fantasy league. And 21 pts from one player - has any player scored that many in one week (not counting the double pts for captains)? Viva la point system!

Sol Campbell was a sweet pickup for Portsmouth and me. Shevchenko as captain? Not so sweet.

Sheva sucks.

I attribute any success, outside of Friedel, to figuring out how to successfully transfer out players who weren't on a team. Big step forward for Yukon United. A move that will be met with MORE TRANSFERS. Who needs a wildcard, we're a phoenix rising from the week 3 ashes. btw, I'm gambling on Friedel with the armband. Someone needs to do it, but I almost fell guilty about it because Tex planted the seed. I figure with Manchester City not scoring and Friedel stopping a few penalties I should move right into third. Portsmouth rulez, Dover droolz. Take that Yerfatma, you sure do look pertty in the rear view.

posted by YukonGold at 06:58 AM on September 13, 2006

I don't Shevchenko is used to not getting at least a few calls go his way. He was automatic for a couple of free kicks beyond the midfield every game I saw him play last year. Not so much in the EPL. Tough move for an aging striker who has to earn respect from the refs all over again. And who forsaw this Portsmouth side not conceding a goal through 4? Nutty. Does James get the call for England now?

And 21 pts from one player - has any player scored that many in one week (not counting the double pts for captains)? Steve Watson definitely got more points a few seasons ago: A defender who got a hat-trick, a clean sheet and the three point bonus. I think it was 27 points. Hi garfy.

It's Gameweek 5: Looks like I'll be moving into the top half, if not the top 10! I like that wildcard feature they added this season...

There are a lot of points to be had today. Chicken...eggs...hatched...

posted by Texan_lost_in_NY at 08:26 AM on September 17, 2006

1-0 scores from the Big 4 and 0-0 Tottenham-Fulham so I guess not so many of the points to be had were taken, eh?

posted by billsaysthis at 12:42 PM on September 17, 2006

I still moved up five places, into the top half. And there's still points to be had this gameweek, on Wednesday, when Liverpool take on Newcastle. I've got Bellamy and Parker slated for their second matches of the week. Need. More. Points!

posted by worldcup2002 at 01:16 AM on September 18, 2006

And once again FSC are not showing the Liverpool match. They are truly fortunate that their offices are 400 miles south of me, because if I were in the LA area I'd be out front making a nuisance of myself until they fixed this. I think we need to start a phone campaign to harass them! I want my Liverpool!

posted by billsaysthis at 05:40 PM on September 18, 2006

Bill, ever notice that the FSC Weekend Recap show starts with the Liverpool fixture? I think they know you want your Liverpool, and they want you to pay-per-view for it.

posted by garfield at 09:23 PM on September 18, 2006

Garfield, if the Setanta package was available to me I would buy it. Under protest but they they'd get my cash. I will not, however, install DirecTV just for this.

posted by billsaysthis at 10:11 AM on September 20, 2006

Wow. So Liverpool games aren't even available to you? I've never hear of the Setanta package? I have seen the better matchups available for purchase on a game by game basis, but never a package dealie. I now join you in your quest, sirbill.

posted by garfield at 10:34 AM on September 20, 2006

Bill, if you have a broadband connection and a decent PC, you could download TVU. The only place the NFL is available on sundays in the UK is on SKY's satellite service, which I can't get, so I watch FOX, CBS, or ESPN, whoever's showing the games, on TVU. Starsports usually has premiership games and sometimes CCTV out of China will show the games. If it's the Chinese channel, I'll usually watch the feed and listen to the game on radio five live at the same time, through the BBC website, although the two can be marginally out of synch sometimes. I had the chance to watch Spurs-Fulham at the weekend, but I'm not stupid.

posted by Mr Bismarck at 12:38 PM on September 20, 2006

According to the live today page, Liverpool vs Newcastle is on on about fifteen different ESPN channels. It suggests you use PPStream, but ESPN Asia (if that's the channel it's on) is available on TVU and the TVU menus aren't in Chinese.

posted by Mr Bismarck at 12:45 PM on September 20, 2006

bill, the Liverpool/Newcastle game isn't even on satellite tv here in England. We're getting the joys of Scunthorpe v Villa in the League Cup. Though to be fair I could also choose to watch Roma v Inter in Serie A, Dunferlime v Rangers in the Scottish League Cup or Spezia v Verona in Serie B tonight.

posted by squealy at 01:39 PM on September 20, 2006

Ooooookay, so ESPN Asia on TVU is currently showing Man United against Arsenal from the weekend, Star Sports is showing Torino against Sienna, (live), CCTV5 seems to be showing Roma against Inter, (live), and ESPN 1 and 2 US seem to be showing a load of old toot. Meanwhile, on PPStream, click the fourth + on the left, which I'm reliably informed is the sports section and then the second link and you can join me, watching Liverpool vs Newcastle. Stevie G needs a shave. Or a strong breeze.

I hope someone was watching... Xabi Alonso's goal was an absolute screamer.

posted by Mr Bismarck at 04:04 PM on September 20, 2006

That wasn't a screamer. The keeper was all over the place. Given would just have caught it and taken a goal kick.

posted by squealy at 05:41 PM on September 20, 2006

That's it. Gerrard is getting the boot. Next week.

posted by garfield at 05:55 PM on September 20, 2006

TVU would have been great a month ago, before I bought my MacBook. Though I suppose I could commandeer the wife's PC for this use, or just run it in the bakground and connect through some VNC too. Too late for today plus I wasn't home at game time. Thanks for the suggestion. Surely the goal will be on the FSW report and YouTube too soon enough. Garfield, just before the season began, Fox announced that they'd sublicensed the US rights to Setanta, a company which specializes in soccer and other sports delivered through PPV to theaters and bars and also has a deal with DirecTV. Setanta get the early (feature) match on Saturdays, plus two other Saturday matches, plus I think first choice at midweek games, and FSC get any of the rest, plus first choice of Sunday matches for their own PPV. Setanta EPL is available through DTV for something like $15/month or $150 for the entire season, that's the package I meant.

Just in case anyone hasn't seen it - the Alonso goal.

posted by squealy at 08:33 AM on September 21, 2006

Definitely a mistake by Harper, but mainly because he was on the edge of his 18 yard area when Alonso looked up. He then fell over on his way back, but I still think it's a belter. Another for Alonso to add to his scrapbook with this pair from Luton last year.
