NBA fantasy league?: I'm provisionally creating a Yahoo league with a live draft time of 1:30 p.m. EDT, Friday, October 22nd, and hoping that I'll be able to change that time. (The live draft times are insanely limited, and there are no evening or weekend hours available that aren't this coming weekend.) Any interest?
By the way, the password is "spofi" (I took a wild guess). I'm in, and the settings look good. The only thing I'd change is the draft date. If we had the draft on the 28th or 29th, it would be closer to the start of the season, when playing time and injury status are more certain. If there's an open slot, of course... ...and yes it's true that I KICK ASS!

yea, I second having the draft later in time, and later in the day. Who's up by 1:30?

My only fear/caution with the number of teams and players per team is falling into a "sausage factory" scenario, like we had last year (see dusted's comment at bottom of page -- I can't seem to link directly to it).

In, and I second smithers comments.

I prefer the term "sword fight" to "sausage factory".

I'm in. I hope to improve my performance from last year.

We're currently using 15 players per team, including bench and IL, times 20 teams. So right now we're at a total of 300(!) players. Here's a couple of changes I came up with to make it less sausage-y. If all of the changes were made, the total players would be reduced to 180. Let's vote! 1. Limit the number of teams to 15 (same as last year). 2. Change the number of UTIL players to 1. 3. Change the number of Bench players to 2. 4. Change the number of IL players to 1.

My votes: 1. Yes 2. No 3. Yes 4. Yes.

Or... if we want to keep 20 teams, we could just use this roster: PG SG SF PF C Bench Bench Bench IL That would also reduce the total to 180 players.

I like the latter suggestion better: small roster, with more teams....I think some people got left out last year with the 15-team limit, plus we have a couple hundred more members since then.

I prefer the term MeatSaber....whoops, I mean...

I like the idea of a smaller roster with more teams also...and smithers...stay on that side of the line, OK? =D

If you check back periodically you should see different times - that's always been the case for baseball (I think they try to balance server load by offering them up in blocks)

I hope I can change all these things once we decide on them. If not, we'd have to recreate the whole league. So far, it's not looking good on this front.

(the thing about Spofi is that it isn't until you come back hours later that you realize how badly something came out sounding....please delete!!)

As commissioner, I have unilaterally implemented dusted's last suggestion (20 teams, one at each position, 3 bench, one IL). Let me know if that works.

sounds great....tks. taupe

Thanks, taupe. No more Howard Eisley or Rafer Alston for me this year!

Any chance on changing the draft time? It's cool if we can't, but I'll be at work then... =D

New blocks of live-draft times just opened up! (Why they weren't open to begin with remains a mystery.) Would a Monday-night-ish time work well for everyone? Say, the 9:00-p.m. hour Eastern, to give left-coasters a chance to show up?

I could be in, but in all honesty, I can't guarantee I'll be around for the whole season. Is that cool? I'd love to play for the third year in a row, but I may have to pass my team off to a friend come, oh, Feb. or March or so.

That reminds me of the Sopranos, when Tony tells the psychiatrist "I might take a vacation, but then I might not..." Got a jail sentence hanging over your head, Ufez?

Heh. Gotta love the vagueness of life, eh? Nah, there's just a good chance that I'll (hopefully) be Peace Corps-ing it somewhere with a deployment sometime this Spring.

Will do bill, if it comes to fruition. I just fear my mailing address will be "Mont Qztelaovaca, Northwest Side, third hut south of the plantain farm". Actually, that'd be part of the appeal...
posted by Ufez Jones at 02:31 PM on October 20, 2004
I think we can give some leeway for a Peace Corps deployment! I've heard (and this is probably completely inaccurate) that you don't want to mention any French language skills or you will end up somewhere in central Africa. (Not that that's a bad thing.)

Right on. I'm in and should be able to make the live draft. If I'm unable to make it through the whole season, I'll auction the team on e-bay offer it to a noob, or, failing that, a friend. I hate it when people bail on leagues.
posted by Ufez Jones at 03:52 PM on October 20, 2004
Ufez, if there's no modern indoor plumbing and electricity, and probably high speed internet connectivity, I fail to see the appeal. But that's me.
posted by billsaysthis at 04:14 PM on October 20, 2004
Cool, Ufez - and now nine slots left. I know we've already monkeyed with the lineups, but what do you guys think about changing from three bench players to two and adding a utility player? It would look like this: PG SG SF PF C Util Bench Bench IL It would add some variation to the lineup and also allow us to correct for whatever category we need (for example, using a center in the Util spot if you're doing bad in FG%). It wouldn't add to the number of players drafted, either.
posted by dusted at 06:13 PM on October 20, 2004
We're at 13 teams now, which makes the league 104 players deep the way we've got it. Since I like dusted's one-Util idea, and since 104's kind of light, I'm adding the one Util slot and keeping the three bench positions. I'll check again this coming afternoon, and if we're not at at least 15 teams by then, we'll keep the nine-player rosters. If we break 15, we can expect eight (one Util, two bench).

It looks like we're going to stay at 13 teams. That's cool. A small league will be a nice change from last season when every player with a pulse was on someone's roster.

Well, that was fun. The roster-setting seems to be bugged with the display of opponents, though.

Does anyone need a center? I've got Yao, the Big Z and Dampier. I'd like a guard... pointing or shooting makes no difference, as long as he's good.

I thought the turnovers category last year was simply a consolation prize for fewest minutes played, and figured it would be nice to give assists a weight more comparable to that of rebounds and the scoring and shooting categories. Why keep offensive rebounds? I didn't think the additional weight for rebounds was that bad an idea.) If any of these are bad ideas, feel free to put together a new league.
