Hmmm, well I obviously can't do html tables (and I've messed up all the links above), but for now, I'm top of the league! Woot!

Pah! I'm useless at the fantasy games...

Its only the first week salmacis...

Hooray for others taking initiative on the updates. I doubt I'll have time to post tables this season. As for my team, I've again spurned Thierry Henry, so don't expect to see me in the top half of the table all season.

posted by taupe at 04:35 PM on August 17, 2004

Hmm I start the season in the exact spot I ended last season. Hopefully, my momentum will be upward this year.

posted by trox at 04:36 PM on August 17, 2004

It may be only the first week, but I was useless last year too!

*slipstreams leader, freewheeling to victory* Lest we forget, it's a marathon not a sprint. Well done on a top notch first week Super Clam. 100th out of 230,000 ain't bad. Okocha is a flash in the pan though. I hope I don't live to eat those words.

posted by squealy at 06:10 PM on August 17, 2004

I remember Okocha finished strongly for Bolton last season, and was quite lucrative to have on the team ... at least in Premierleague.com scoring. I'm no.8 and breaking into the top 5 next!

My first priority is to avoid the drop ;-)

Anyone have a read on Vieira's injury?

posted by garfield at 09:03 AM on August 18, 2004

boy did I make some bad choices. I think I'll take a hit and rearrange my team this week.

posted by sauril at 12:20 PM on August 18, 2004

Fun fact: 22 of our league's 28 squads contain Henry.

posted by taupe at 04:33 PM on August 21, 2004

The other 6 are doomed then, I suspect.

posted by Fat Buddha at 07:02 PM on August 21, 2004

LFCFilter: Does anyone know what injury is keeping Chris Kirkland off the squad this time? I checked PhysioRoom, did some googling and BBC'ing but cannot turn up anything more recent than last season's wrist articles. ChelseaFilter: For a 2-0 team, they are just barely playing well enough to win. Last week was semi-understandable but today against Birmingham 1-0 was a joke. If it wasn't for the fact that Forsell cannot play against CFC and that left them with Heskey up front, I don't know that Mourinho would be sitting so pretty.

posted by billsaysthis at 07:45 PM on August 21, 2004

Kirkland sneezed too hard and broke a collar bone...

posted by StarFucker at 11:31 PM on August 21, 2004

I thought it was just a matter of Benitez preferring Dudek.

posted by Fat Buddha at 08:57 AM on August 22, 2004

FB, I read that yesterday he wasn't even on the sub bench and it was due to injury. Since you're in England I assume you have better sources than me. Will be interesting to see who plays against Graz though.

posted by billsaysthis at 10:54 AM on August 22, 2004

I dunno, Bill to tell the truth, I heard on the radio last week that Dudek had been preferred to Kirkland, no mention of any injury. have a link.

posted by Fat Buddha at 11:30 AM on August 22, 2004

btw, after Arsenal's 5-3 win today, I must say I've had rather a good weekend at the office.

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:18 PM on August 22, 2004

Thanks FB. WC, had Soccernet's play by play open for that game. What an amazing 15 minutes, from 49 through 64. And as 22 of us have Henry, very nice points, but how many have him as captain. I do.

posted by billsaysthis at 12:41 PM on August 22, 2004

I do.

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:52 PM on August 22, 2004

Yes, FB, it does mean the other six are doomed. But the point is, for the other 22, he's not a differentiator, except for anyone foolish enough not to have him as captain.

posted by taupe at 01:12 PM on August 22, 2004

Ha! My prediction came true. I'm no. 5! Next stop, Top 3! Wheeeeeeeeeee.

posted by worldcup2002 at 06:08 PM on August 22, 2004

I'm up to 52nd out of 248,000. Woot! Who's doing the table?

posted by BigCalm at 03:33 AM on August 23, 2004

Wheeee! I got points on every single one of Arsenal's 5 goals. Near top of the table with a bullet!

posted by trox at 08:44 AM on August 23, 2004

Caught some highlights late last night, and all I can say is...Wow. The Arsenal match was chalk full of sick goals. My favorite was the defender looking to cross the ball to the right post, noticed the goalie cheating, and then blasting away from miles out. Awesome. And who is the dude who could've already scored the goal of the year; the flick-up to the booming spin-o-rama? Wow.

posted by garfield at 09:35 AM on August 23, 2004

That would be Patrick Berger of Portsmouth I imagine garfield, though I only had a tenuous grip on what you were saying.

posted by squealy at 11:52 AM on August 23, 2004

What, the objective scientific term 'spin-o-rama' doesn't give you sure footing to proceed upon? Thanks, squealy. I think you nailed it. The action on the ball was tennis-like.

btw, bill, Kirkland has a back injury.

posted by worldcup2002 at 02:50 AM on August 24, 2004

2 points today...lookout!! And Kirkland sucks...brittle piece of crap. Liverpool have two dead weights still bringing down the team, Kirkland and Carragher. The sooner they are gone, the sooner Liverpool will be a contender. Sad about Michael Owen.

posted by StarFucker at 07:43 PM on August 24, 2004

2 points today...lookout!! Yeah, because none of us will be getting points tomorrow when Henry goes wild against hapless Blackburn. Not to mention the six points I got today from Lampard. Two points, woohoo.

posted by StarFucker at 12:45 AM on August 25, 2004

Yeah sarcastic, I mean who could take the idea of Liverpool as a contender seriously? Great result against AK Graz btw. You're always targetting the wrong man SF. If you want someone to scapegoat try lazy, greedy Kewell.

posted by squealy at 02:34 AM on August 25, 2004

Kewell is awesome... Talk about targetting the wrong man... Anytime any Liverpool player is in trouble, what do they do? They pass to Kewell as he is the only creative midfielder they have. He takes on players, thats why he loses the ball sometimes, but no other Liverpool player does that besides Baros and now maybe Cisse.

posted by StarFucker at 09:35 AM on August 25, 2004

Only creative midfielder? You seem to be dismissing Stephen Gerrard somewhat lightly.

posted by squealy at 11:31 AM on August 25, 2004

only creative midfielder You just wait until Xabi gets on the field! Kewell is a punk who should go back to Oz so he can be the big man he so obviously wants to be. /sarcasm Did any of you see the Chelsea-CP match yesterday? I was really unimpressed with the winners. I don't know who was doing color commentary, some former player, but he made the point that for all the talent so far they're playing like a collection of stars rather than a team. Some good work rate from players like Cole and Babayaro but then you wonder how much playing time those two will get against top-rank squads when Bridge, Huth, Robben and Duff are healthy.

posted by billsaysthis at 11:51 AM on August 25, 2004

It's not Alonso that Kewell needs to be worried about. It's Luis Garcia. Says Benitez of his newest signing: "Luis has been with several clubs, he is a good scorer and he can battle for the ball and pass well. He is always moving and is sharp and clever. ... He can use right or left foot and it is difficult to find players who can do that. He played as a striker for Barcelona's youth team and as a winger for me at Tenerife, he is a good bet to play anywhere." Sweat, Kewell, sweat. And go, Liverpoooooooooool!

posted by worldcup2002 at 01:19 PM on August 25, 2004

another big day for those with Henry and Reyes... Do Man U and Liverpool players simply not play this week?

posted by sauril at 04:42 PM on August 25, 2004

Sauril, every team plays 38 matches by the last day but not always on the same schedule. Liverpool and ManU had CL qualifiers this midweek (both went through) and so couldn't play any EPL games. Speaking of Arsenal, who here thought Fabregas was going to play well enough to question Wenger's decision not to sell Viera? Not that a 17 year old is quite his equal, but they are a convincing 3-0 without him and the Gunners sure could use that GBP28M.

posted by billsaysthis at 04:55 PM on August 25, 2004

I've already given up on this year. I'd truthfully be shocked if Arsenal were to drop a single point this season, or if Henry were to fail to figure, either by scoring or by assist, in any fewer than seventy league goals. And don't tell me how abnormal that is, because I know. But it'll happen, mark my words. The future of the Premiership is Thierry Henry's boot stomping on a human face forever. My only chance to stay respectable would be to blow up my entire squad and rebuild around Henry, but every fibre of my being rebels against the idea. Henry is now the Real Madrid and the Manchester United combined of this fantasy league, with all that that implies. Tables or no tables, you'd all really rather I kept my mouth shut abot this for the rest of the year.

posted by taupe at 05:46 PM on August 25, 2004

Nah, I'm making a firm prediction now that Reyes will be top scorer this season for Arsenal. Only 58 points this week, you lot must be catching me now.

posted by BigCalm at 05:56 PM on August 25, 2004

Bill, thanks. I guess what I thought was going on this week was that there were a few midweek games and then the rest on the weekend. I am regretting my Cisse instead of Reyes decision now... Taupe, I understand. I missed out on Henry last year and it killed me. Wasn't going to make that mistake again.

posted by sauril at 06:19 PM on August 25, 2004

Well done Clamster on 73rd out of 250,000. Shame we're the top team in the Midlands. Reyes top scorer for Arsenal? My tenner says Henry.

posted by squealy at 06:28 PM on August 25, 2004

67, not bad considering I didn't have 2 players playing... up to 6th!

posted by sauril at 06:51 PM on August 25, 2004

I think over the length of the season Henry and Cisse will be a higher scoring fantasy combo than Henry and Reyes if only because Pires, Bergkamp and Llundberg(sp?) will demand some of the playing time. And what about Fabregas? Does anyone have him on their team, in either league? Or will his playing time vanish with Viera's return?

posted by billsaysthis at 08:34 PM on August 25, 2004

Pires and Lungberg are midfielders, though. And Bergkamp has been playing alongside Henry and Reyes for a few games now. But unless Liverpool buy an established forward, Cisse's starting every game, so I might as well stick with him... Fabergas' playing time will definitely go down. Wenger has said as much.

posted by sauril at 08:54 PM on August 25, 2004

Wenger did say that before the season started though...and he looks damn good. They don't even need Vieira. They should have sold his ass and bought some nice players...and Owen could have stayed at Liverpool...and so on and so on...

posted by StarFucker at 01:40 AM on August 26, 2004

I am a bit annoyed that they put Nolan in as my sub when I had changed the order days ago to have Pederson number 1. It's only five points, but still, it has cost me 2 places

posted by Fat Buddha at 05:37 AM on August 26, 2004

Are you certain about that FB? If so email the FFL site and inform them of it. I'm not saying you'd get your five points back but if it alerts them to a problem then it's all for the good. I've found them to be very responsive to email queries. (Last season at least anyway).
