So long, EPL Fantasy League Week 22, and thanks for all the tampering (ahem). squealy's Ardley Athletic's 69 points win the week, extending squealy's January lead and adding pressure to the leaders in a tightening race in the overall table. If we're doing this Pantheon/N00b split at season's end, we'll have to watch the 20th-/21st-place safety line, where BillSaysThisScores! presently hang by a six-point thread above Nemo's Dreamers. I still think we should do a 15/15 split at the end of the season. The newbies can join the second league and make it bigger. That way, if no newbies join, we won't get a totally unbalanced 20/10 split. And it's ok if the secondary league is bigger. It's just like it is in the EPL (20 teams) vs First Division (24 teams). So, what's the cutoff? I say 15 up - 15 down. I'm just going by the numbers, so no disrespect meant to individual players. I'll be glad to drop down if I don't make that cut. I'm safe now, but only 31 pts and 8 places above #15. With about 15 more weeks to go, I think it's all still up for grabs!

Nice one taupe. A sterling defensive performance by my boys and a gamble on Liverpool's two games in one gameweek paid off to an extent (it forced my hand knowing Giggs wasn't going to play against Wolves). Things were looking absolutely fandabidosee after Sunday but the performances in the games since were mediocre to say the least. I'm sure it'll all go pear-shaped sooner rather than later.

Don't forget about the newbies, worldcup... We should probably have 20 for the first league, and the rest for the second... Thats 10 from this league plus newbies.

They are still showing Saha with the white and black uniform, what's their problem?!?!?! Damn ManUre losing to Wolves and stoopid last minute tying goal today. If it weren't for my sprained thumb I would jam it in Fergie's... eye!

Could I be in the second league? Honestly, I haven't paid attention to this in weeks, I just set my lineup and reserves and hoped for the best. It was a lucky crapshoot.

Grace Kelly? Huh? Wha? re: 15-15 (PantheonLeague-Demigod&NewbieLeague) split next season, as I've said before, Fooker, I'd much rather it be 15-15 and newbies can make it 15-50, I don't care. If no newbies show up, it'd still be 15-15. But I don't want to go 20-10, have no newbies show up and have it be that. Or maybe it just doesn't matter. C'mon, the rest of you, what do you think?

Also, I nominate taupe to do the weekly updates for next year's Pantheon league. The 2nd division can have lilnemo. Hahahahahaha.

Well, i say 20-whatever so that more people make it to the Premier League and that way it would be more realistic, maybe?

realistic. fantasy league. two worlds collide!

C'mon, the rest of you, what do you think? I think you already started another thread to discuss this "issue". I dub thee SpoFiCardoso.

I didn't start this thread. It was mentioned here by taupe in his post. I continued it here because I figured the old post would disappear off the locker room main page soon. You're getting curmudgeonly in your old age. I dub thee Bulldog Brummy Bog Bandit.

Fooker: OK 15-15, 20-10, 18-12, I don't care. Let's just get some agreement on the cutoff. 20's fine, if that's what most of us can agree on. Just don't come complaining to me when you only have 10 in one league and things seem a bit boring because there's not enough competition or whatever. Send complaints to: The Fooker, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

I wasn't aware we'd actually agreed anything, let alone the minutiae of the idea. Why not save the discussion, and a vote maybe, until the close season?
posted by squealy at 11:28 AM on January 22, 2004
Well, then, we'd be moving the line endlessly wouldn't we. "Hey, it can't be 15-15! I'm #19! Let's make it 20-10!" This is starting to be less fun than it's worth. Let's just drop it so I can focus on kicking all of your asses. Two leagues or not, I'm gonna win this thing!

If we agree that the next EPL league will be on the EPL site with two versions then we can kind of wait to see what the interest level is next year and make a split at that time by sending out the league pass codes to the people that are slotted into the various leagues. however, that removes the drama of the battle to avoid relegation but really, we can't make a final decision until the final numbers are in which won't be until the new season starts and what is that, August? But then we have season-long drama with any further SpoFi franchises shuffled into a third division for the following year. I dunno.
posted by gspm at 01:35 PM on January 22, 2004
Oh man! A third division!! I can only dream...
posted by StarFucker at 01:50 PM on January 22, 2004
I'm with you, Fooker. But it looks like it'll stay a dream if all the joyless wonders and pedantic wet blankets have their way. Perhaps we should just wait until the end of the season (like squealy said) and see if we want to split it. We may just do next season with everyone in one league, but with a clear upfront understanding that at the end of that season, there will be a split. A dichotomy. A division of the Eastern and Western Roman Empire. The SCHISM! But I can only dream. Meanwhile, I will continue my slow but inexorable climb to the pinnacle of this arbitrary undertaking.

I would rather do the 15/15+ split. I say we do it after this season. If thats a problem with some people we should tally the pts from feb 1 til the end of the season and relegate according to pts in that period.

I think I'm starting to like this etrader guy more and more. More than his buddy the Fooker.
posted by worldcup2002 at 12:05 AM on January 23, 2004
Why February 1st exactly etrader? Should my hard earned 1,035 points count for nothing? Oh and wc2002, asking for discussion on an issue and then dismissing those who raise doubts in such an off-hand manner is hardly helping your case. Unless of course you were joking.
posted by squealy at 02:34 AM on January 23, 2004
It's easy to raise doubts. How about coming up with ways to make things happen. Also, if you raise doubts, try not to undermine your own credibility. In the same thread, you say football is "marginalised" on SpoFi. In the next breath, you say you didn't invite more people to SpoFi because you thought we had enough people. What is it going to be? I've already responded to your concerns in the other thread. Go ahead and read it. Look, I can't control what you want to think, say, or what doubts you want to raise. Go ahead, raise your doubts. Just don't expect me to like everything you say. Also, when Ufez brings up stuff like "what if players in the other league score more points than the premier league" and asking why things are so "arbitrary", I think he totally misses the point. I mean, c'mon, this whole thing is arbitrary. We're already in a fantasy world playing with fantasy players getting arbitrary points for "performance" (I mean, how come some players get "bonus" pts?). I wasn't doing this to get less arbitrary, it was a totally arbitrary decision to split. I just thought it was more complexity in a make-believe world just for more fun. I mean, what's more arbitrary than thinking you can buy and sell players at the drop of a hat, or mixing players from different teams, etc. C'mon! I just get frustrated when something, to me, as simple and fun-hearted as this has all the fun analyzed out of it. It seems to me you're just looking to poke holes in the thing, and not credible at that. There are obvious issues about timing, the cutoff, communicating to others, newcomers, but these other arguments about arbitrariness and players scoring more points in parallel leagues are just ... beside the point. If you're going to take it that seriously, don't play! As Fooker says, it just PUMPS MY NADS!
posted by worldcup2002 at 01:28 PM on January 23, 2004
In further arbitrariness, I am also putting up one European swallow, one African swallow and a bag of elderberries as top prizes for both leagues.
posted by worldcup2002 at 01:52 PM on January 23, 2004
Are either of those swallows coconut laden as added incentive?
posted by trox at 02:58 PM on January 23, 2004
I am only offering unladen swallows. Coconuts are not within my budget.

Hey, I can afford two coconuts, or I will be able to next year. So them birds be laden!

How about this? DAILY MIRROR: Liverpool chief Rick Parry scored an embarrassing own goal last night when he told a fan that manager Gerard Houllier was not in the same class as Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. Classic.
