EPL Fantasy League Week 9 (October) finally concludes, and a good week it was for everybody who had Nicolas Anelka. Who I just ate a transfer penalty to sell, on top of leaving Claudio Reyna on my friggin' bench. But wait...what's this?... (more inside)

The first break I caught was when David Moyes left Unsworth on his bench for the entirety of Everton's worrisome draw with Southampton. Then Charlton helped Blackburn's death spiral along yesterday, and then tonight's game happened. I had sold Emerton and Anelka for Lee Clark and Shearer with the two-match gameweeks in mind -- Clark was going to happen anyway, and I figured Shearer and Anelka were essentially interchangeable and Shearer had the extra game, so why not. And that latter analysis turned out exactly right -- 16 apiece in their most recent matches. In other news, mossy and squealy each broke the 70-point mark, as did etrader9, who has scored 128 points from players this month. This "Clay H" character is due to launch out of the cellar in the next week or two, after spotting the rest of us the month of August, and he's in the hunt for month honors as well.

Anyone checked out that View Graph functionality below the league table? You can plot, for up to three teams in our league, gameweek points, gameweek rank, overall rank or team value on a week-by-week basis. For instance, I have plotted Gameweek points by week for Red Dragons, Bog Bandits and Blammos. Blammos and Boggies have been more volatile. I notice a nice uptrend for the Dragons. This feature will be really interesting at the end of the season. I've also plotted Gameweek points by week for the teams with the most transfers: vagabonds (catfish!), Bog Bandits and Bosiak Bashers. Pretty similar pattern but Bog Bandits seems to have had a better go of it. Or, just plot taupe's vs Blammos' overall rank to see taupe's inexorable rise to the giddy heights of league leadership. ;-)

It's still early doors. Week 9 out of 38 is still a long way from the finish. Don't worry, there's plenty of time for me to go top of the table!

What a horrible week for me. Shearer at least made it respectable with his 2 goals and assist last night. Otherwise, I was staring at 28 points. I cocked up by not making Shearer captain. I never look at the fixtures so I didn't know Newcastle had 2 games this gameweek.

posted by salmacis at 02:37 AM on October 22, 2003

Me neither salmacis...i try to keep track, but they switch them around so much i never know who is playing when.

posted by StarFucker at 08:49 AM on October 22, 2003

Is there anyone who made Shearer captain because of the two game week? I've joined the ranks of muppets who didn't.

posted by squealy at 08:59 AM on October 22, 2003

Someone should do the decent thing and alert the rest of us when there is a 2 game week.

posted by Fat Buddha at 11:33 AM on October 22, 2003

the decent thing. pffft. this is a competition not a picnic. advantage goes to those that keep on top of these things. people should also do the decent thing and tell me when players on my team are injured or demoted from the starting XI. I mean i carried the previously lucrative So'ton keeper Jones for two weeks after he'd been bumped down the depth chart due to the return of their first choice keeper. hey, if somebody wants to make that extra effort to keep on top of schedules and injuries and the like I'd put that in the competitive advantage column and not expect it to be communally shared. that said: as the schedule currently is set the next time teams play two games in a week is week 19. Villa and Portsmouth. but do schedules get tweaked at the last minute? will there be more?

posted by gspm at 11:59 AM on October 22, 2003

Yes, plenty more.

posted by StarFucker at 12:14 PM on October 22, 2003

Hold on to Jones, gspm. He's cheap and he can't do any damage. What if you had poor six-goal Jaskelainen instead? If you think you can get more points from spending money on another goalie, go ahead, but I'm saving my dough for a new midfielder and striker. Slowly, I am fashioning a team that will ... do better than a mid-table showing.

posted by worldcup2002 at 12:51 PM on October 22, 2003

Wait 'til pitches start freezing and fixtures have to be postponed until spring. That'll really play havoc. Anyway, the home page lists the fixtures for the current and following gameweek, so you have the opportunity to check it whenever you check your team. And then there's the Data View when literally you check your own team. That's odd, though. Villa-Portsmouth gets moved up a day, and because the preset definition of the start of Gameweek 20 is fifteen minutes before kickoff of all the night games on 7 January, it gets dumped into the same gameweek as the 28-29 December games.

Shit. I just bought Jones, now I'll have to sell him again and give up another 4 chuffin points.

Jones was dropped as soon as I figured out he was unlikely to see regular action. Faced with my other keeper being the craptastic Friedel (blame the keeper or blame the whole team? i dunno) I am faced with a good goalie (oops, there is my hockey fandom peeking through) that won't be playing and a so-so goalie who is playing all the time which means not many points will be coming from my keeper despite more than 10mil invested at the position. Swapped Jones on my free transfer and then got tired (impatient) of waiting for the gameweek deadline to pass and dumped Friedel for Howard (with a couple of other moves).
