What's a coach really worth?

Let's face it, many people are overpaid. Some teachers are, some coaches are, some transit drivers are, some presidents, some etc., etc., etc. Some of this is because they are paid on a scale, because unions have overinflated the value of what they do. If a teacher thinks they are underpaid, well, they should go find another job where you can get paid what you feel you're worth? I live in the Bay Area, and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) drivers do all of sitting in the front, opening the doors, announcing the station, announcing when the doors are closing, and punching a button. For this, with overtime, they make more than 100K a year. What we need more of is people who are dedicated to doing the job they are in, whether it's managing a McDonald's or running a university. It helps, when you work at a job you truly enjoy, when the money coming in is less than what it should, or could be. There's lots of jobs out there that pay more than I make that I could do, but wouldn't want to. I'd get bored, I'd dread going to work, etc.

Passion Passes Primary Postseason Play

I guess I'd pull for the KY Karma, just cuz of the name.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!

Excellent column, by the way.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!

Being a New Orleans native, living in the Bay Area, I cut my cable company and paid through the arse to get DirecTV and NFL Sunday ticket so I could watch the team I've rooted for since the opening kickoff return for a touchdown in Tulane Stadium against the LA Rams. I was in that number when Tom Dempsey kicked a 63 yard field goal, and, being Catholic, I knelt to the shrine of his shoe at the Hall of Fame in Canton. That being said, I was skeptical all season, from the win over Atlanta on MNF to the stomping of the Giants in week 16, but having watched what they did to the Eagles twice, I believe they are more solid than the Bears and will beat them Sunday afternoon. Geaux Saints!!!!!!!!

Ready for a shocker?

As a Saints fan since the franchise was begun, I'm in agreement that Drew deserved a few more votes, but the best thing now would be to see him voted Super Bowl MVP. There's an old joke in Saintsville about an old Cajun dying and going to Hell. One day, the Devil sees him actually enjoying himself, so he turns up the heat, only to find the Cajun enjoying himself more. So the Devil freezes him out, only to find the old Cajun jumping up and down, laughing up a storm. The Devil asks him why, and the old Cajun hugs the devil and says "The Saints just won the Super Bowl!"

Quarterback Drew Brees tell his mom to go long -- off a short pier

First of all, Drew Brees doesn't seem like a non-charitable person-given what he's done, publicly, in his new city, and with the Brees Foundation. And while his mother and father seem to have provided the means for him to get to the NFL level, I doubt that his mother was there very much for him. Lawyers, especially high-powered ones that aspire to sit on appellate courts, usually leave it to hired help to raise the family.

Marketing the Grief [flash]

I don't think we'll ever know whether Tiger's Dad was great. But I'm sure, to Tiger, he was. And that's all that matters.

Are You Ready For Some Jeb-Ball?

Truth is that Jeb knows he'll never be president, with all the crud that's been going on in FL the last few years-kidnappings, child molesters, allowing innocent people to be killed, etc.. Joey, most if not all the owners are Republicans, with the possible exception of Al Davis (but he's 'not an owner', is he) so they're already aligned with a political ideology. I think he's the wrong man for the job, though. Besides, he already runs the NFL (Northern FLorida), :P

Brackets trashed around the country.

I too was going to mention the Jazz program at UNT. Great school, go GM. I gotta pull for LSU, though I don't think they can beat UCLA.

The Agony of Defeat.

Regarding what the networks show where, I was in French Polynesia several years ago, and the French Open was on. They were showing mostly the French players. Broadcasts are nearly always taylored to the people who're watching. True enough about NBC and tape delay, and not showing the grit of what the athletes go through.

Sharapova Out of Australian Open Final

Her grunting is not as bad as Monica Seles back in the day. And she does look better. Since you can watch tennis in any language (watched the French Open in French from Tahiti one year), turning the sound off so you don't have to listen to Enberg and Fernandez is a good way to go. Maria got shafted on two points that would have given her the third set. Justine got shafted on one point, but she won the game anyway.
