The sports media, being in the hype business as they are, do make an all-Tiger-all-the time event of every tournament he's in. Makes it tough to root for him, although he's a good guy. It will be interesting to see how the broadcasters and "analysts" will handle his absence this weekend.

Quote: Reading some of these comments is what it might be like for a blind guy reading a cheese grater. Ah yes, but we must have patience with them, my friend. Remember the wonderful education the younger generation receives these days. As for Harrington, good riddance. Yes, the Lions may suck, but he sucked right along with the rest of them. If he does any better in Miami under hard-ass Saban I'd be surprised. The first time Nick jumps his case will probably be the first time it's ever happened to him. For all the talk about Mariucci not liking him, he still treated Joey with kid gloves, even as he benched him.

Is it me or does his fat ass just get winded while walking 36holes?? lmao--Ain't it the truth? He's not exactly the poster boy for the workout room, is he? And I wouldn't bet a nickel on him this week--he shot his wad for the next 6 months at BellSouth.

Mr. Checkdown won't make it with anyone, with the possible exception of the Bears, with his scintillating ability to manufacture a 35-yard field goal drive in 15 plays. Says something about his ability to find someone downfield. And please--don't tell me about the lousy offensive line, that's a given in Detroit. A good quarterback can make something happen when the primary play breaks down. Harrington absolutely sucked when it came to improvising anything except a two-yard dink-dunk pass to a running back. What frosted me the most about him was that he didn't think he was doing that badly. No wonder Dre Bly ripped him when Mariucci was canned.

It's one thing that he had the "greatest show on turf" thing going with the Rams. If he does anything within light years of that with Detroit then he truly is a miracle worker.

The Lions just hired Rod Marinelli, an intense, defense-oriented guy. They could have hired Mike Singletary, also an intense, defense-oriented guy. Marinelli may have more experience, but at the place the Lions are now, I'm not sure how much experience counts vs. the ability to turn a team around by developing a winning attitude. Singletary will hopefully be a head coach in the near future, somewhere.

Thomas is an egotistical a$$, but then, he's not the only GM or team pres who's blind to how badly they've screwed up (Matt Millen come to mind?). Isiah should follow the example set by his former teammate Joe Dumars, who was a classier player and certainly is a classier team exec.

Grossman played pretty well once he shook off the butterflies, certainly a lot better than Orton would have (and it pains me to say that as a Purdue grad). It's not his fault that they lost. Why Smith wasn't double and even triple-teamed is a mystery to me. He's the guy that had to be stopped.

How can they screw things up so badly so frequently? It's insane that this guy is still the coach. He should've been gone long ago. Yeah he's underpaid and his staff sucks, that doesn't change the fact that he's an idiot. Try being a Lions fan for awhile. At least your guys have a winning record and a shot, however slim, at the playoffs.

I'd like to see an owner who had the cojones (and smarts) to actually build negative incentives in. For example, Pudge Rodriguez would have taken a big hit off his $10MM annual salary last year if I were the owner, since by his standards he sucked. He was up there swinging at everything, walked only 10 times all year, BA, homers, RBIs all way down. No big leaguer should be able to coast from 5-yr deal to 5-yr deal and only have to kick it in when it's time for a new one.

I know Pete was guilty of lots of things, but he was not a power hitter and had no apparent reason to cork it up.

txwinner, the coach (Mariucci) may have been a winner in SF, but he sure wasn't here. He walked into a pretty good situation in SF, light years away from what it was (and is) here. Yesterday's game was some validation that there's a lot more wrong than the head coach.

Mariucci was too nice, period. It's been a country club atmosphere at least since Fontes was there. Even a supposed hard-a** like Bobby Ross couldn't get anything done. They need a young, up and coming type of guy with fire in his gut. Of course, Millen should go too, he never should have had the job in the first place.

Rick Mirer
If Mirer's really the worst, I wish he were still playing for Notre Dame.
