Blue Jackets' Berard tests positive for banned substance: Mandatory testing for "performance-enhancing substances", as agreed by the NHL and NHLPA in the new CBA, began on Jan. 15. In what may be an indicator of what’s to come, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Bryan Berard tested positive nandrolone as part of drug testing for the Olympics.

Why doesn't the NHL get rid the rules that limit the curvature of a stick blade?: Last night, with the Bruins already a man down, Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle challenged the curve of Sergei Samsonov's stick. While this "gamesmanship" may add an element of strategy to the game, why not let the players use any curve they want?

There's a good summary of Pittsburgh's options here. Quote from Tim Leiweke, president and chief executive officer of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Staples Center and Los Angeles Kings, "The Pittsburgh Penguins can be the Kansas City Penguins, no question about it," Leiweke said. "That team here ... it will sell out every ticket in advance, end of story. That team will be a huge instant home run here. And that kid, Sidney Crosby, is unbelievable."

The pool of coaches available to the Habs is somewhat reduced, given that the coach needs to be bilingual. Someone like Brent Sutter for example, wouldn't be seriously considered. Still, I think Carbonneau has what it takes to be a successful coach in Montreal.

Canadiens and Avalanche Swap Goalies
Deja vu all over again? Somehow, I don't think this one will work out as well for the Avs as the last time the Habs shipped a goalie to Colorado. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in Quebec, since Theodore was the team's Quebecois superstar. Also, this has to be the first time an NHL team has had an all-Euro goaltending duo!
