The NFL reefing is way too inconsistent. The Lions Su get's a personal foul for a phantom elbow to the head of a (or a push down) QB & the hit on Miller & the double punch to the face of Roethlisberger, don't get a flag . WTF!!!!!!

The players that were in the stands should not ever play again if they participated in the brawl. Some were trying to make peace. I didn't see any coach or team reps trying to stop it. They should be held accountable too! Shouldn't need a complaint -every picture tells a story, & every video allows you to slow it down & identify!

After the latest NHL lock out the "rules" were changed. I notice a big shift in how youth hockey was officiated. There was a focus on hits to the head; it took the kids a little while to understand the "new" rules & they adapted. @ That time I had a Midget & Mite playing. Now my midget has "retired" & my mite is a First year Pee Wee, which is the 1st year of checking here in the states. I am appalled at the lack of protection afforded to the youngster's heads! I too love tough physical hockey, but as I sit & watch 3 to 4 games a week I just don't see the emphasis on blows to the head that I saw just a few short years ago. This is very easy to fix. Anything to the head is a 2 minute minor, get 3 in a game & you get a game misconduct. Singling out Don Cherry is easy, but miss-placed.

Great kid, great story. Many thanks to this young man. He prevented a tragic ending. Sounds like he can tackle too! Gun control laws have nothing to do with it. Criminals don't follow laws. Stricter gun laws would have done nothing to stop the girl from getting on the bus with a gun. When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

"You [expletive] better cut the [expletive]," he shouted, as team personnel tried to pull him back to the huddle. "You're going to get [expletive] up."
Martin then said to his mother: "Somebody do something to you, you better tell me. I'm going to [expletive] somebody up."
If this is a real quote, isn't it playing right into the Cuban quote?
You can't go "on the road" & talk trash & not expect the hometown fans to respond. His mother brought it on herself. Doesn't make it right, but it would happened @ a little league game, if you sat amongst the other teams fans & started talking sh!t, not to metion an NBA playoff game.
I find it funny that a guys goes out of his way to portray the thug life, then gets upset when someone says "you're a thug"

One other quick point I forgot-If the league wants the ASG to be a showcase of the top talent in the league, for that year, they need to get system that does that. The "All Star" roster this year is a joke. I can think of a half a dozen (Metric conversion 6, JK!) players that don't deserve to be an "All Star".
posted by directpressure at 08:20 AM on January 26, 2009
Apparently the rule states that you must be out one game prior to the ASG, in order to avoid the "show up for the event clause", well, Pavel Dattsyuk left the last game before the ASG in the 3rd period., when HE GOT INJURED! He should be exempt from this rule. If the NHL wants to "showcase" it's best talent how about coming up with a television contract that allows people to actually see the game? Here it the states the game was on VS., which is a premium cable channel. It goes to something like 2.5% of homes in the US, if that many How about the CBJ fans that have "paid" & are true hockey fans? They get punished by not being able to see 2 of the games stars..

To me, it just goes to show how far we have gone with political correctness. This kid can't pitch because he is too good. Are you kidding me? The message needs to get out- There are losers in life, not everyone succeeds, but hard work & in this case practice, (i.e. go to the batting cage) should be the message to the other players in the league., Not take the kid off the mound because he's just too fast. This is one of the most ridiculous kid's sports stories I have ever read. If you read the article, it sounds too me like this kids team was winning & the former champions didn't like it (Plus he choose not to play for them), so they shut him down. Thats what I get from reading between the lines. The right thing to do is let him finish the season & move him up a league next year.

Poor judgment on Shelly's part, but I see it as a part of the Red Sox/ Yankees rivalry. I would expect that the IRS has already contacted the family (As it has with fans that now own milestone home run balls) demanding their cut. I thought it was mandatory to chant "Yankees Suck", "Red Sox Suck" depending on what team you root for? Maybe Shelly falls into the realm of dumb jock and just wrote the last thing he heard? EBay it & take the money, use it for the required therapy because of the emotional scaring!

Let’s remember that the Heisman Trophy is for football accomplishments at the collegiate level. It has very little to do with what the NFL sees in a player or what the player will become at the next level. Eric Crouch anyone? A perfect example that the HT doesn’t have any relevance to the NFL. How bout Andre Ware? Please don’t blame the Lions for Mr. Ware; he just wasn’t an NFL talent. I am sure there are other trophy winners that didn’t do much in the NFL & some that did, my point is this; The Heisman trophy doesn’t mean anything for draft position or success in the NFL.

How about an Original Six Conference + Ottawa? I am a long time NHL fan and that idea appeals to me. Why not cater to your long time fans a bit? Usually a staple of this type of discussion has Detroit moving into the East. Maybe Put 3 Original Six teams in a divison but in the same Conference then there would be a greater chance of Original Six playoff match ups? I am all for a “major” realignment of the NHL. All Eastern Time zone games are a plus, but Detroit would have to change Conferences.

OK I watched the video. They do have 3 separate times you can "see” something on his hand. Last night & 1 other time same spot, once on the index finger. I am not familiar with rosin (I know what it is & what it is supposed too do) but is it possible that the use of rosin & dirt could be the cause? If not let me know, as I said I don't know rosin very well! This could be a cause/effect, which falls completely with in the rules. Or he could have been dabbing the pine tar on his hand. It wouldn't be the first time an athlete tried to gain a competitive advantage. I just hope the league doesn’t suspend him too long. Oh, wait the Ump didn’t throw him out of the game for violating the rules.............

Hey I just saw a picture that supposedly show it was shit on KR hand, I guess that’s "proof” too? Still haven't seen this photographic proof from 3 strait appearances showing some substance on the same part of the hand as was seen last night. Can it really be proof at this point? I am sure some folks in St. Louis are handy with the old Photoshop! Now I have read & heard lots of stories today, that most MLB pitchers use some type of doctoring method usually pine tar. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't what he had on his hand last night. An undeniable FACT is he went on to pitch 7 more innings of shut out ball. He would have to be a LUNITIC to continue doctoring the ball AFTER it was brought to light. I feel that the media is just itching to find someway to discredit this years Tigers. Hell I can hardly believe "The Detroit Tigers take the field in the 102nd World Series" myself! Maybe that’s what KR brought to The Motor City, the ability to teach all the young kids to doctor the ball. Not Gold Glove pitcher fielding or veteran leadership. No doubt in my mind IF the umpire thought he was violating he would have been inspected & tossed. From the umpires perspective it is usually pretty easy to see the ball's movement & unusually movement at that.

I live in the Motor City & Love my home teams (How ‘bout those Tigers?) Now to my point, what I saw in the NBA playoffs was star players stepping up & taking over. The Pistons in recent years have lived under the “team with no star” philosophy. It worked for a while, but I think that runs is over, they need a “STAR” maybe KG? I also think they must keep Big Ben. All of the players have said he is the energy that gets the team going, you can’t lose that.

I used to Ump so I have been in the line of fire. Gave it up after I got chased to the car by a bunch of 17-18 year olds with bats. Not worth the $25 bucks a game. I have a real problem with this. Currently I have a 7 year old playing his first year after T-ball. The first thing the coach talked to the kids about was throwing your bat. This guy has had to have been told through his years of playing ball, the same thing. Not just after hitting the ball but about throwing anything in anger on the ball field. This is Young’s second bat throwing incident. Blue chip talent a side, (& MLB brother) I feel he should have been sat down for the remainder of the year. How do you punish the guy by making him work with kids? “Today we are going to go over dirt kicking after a bad call, & tomorrow we will cover throwing equipment out of the dugout” Maybe his work with the Miracle kids will snap him into reality so he realizes what a privilege it is to be able to play at a high level. I would make him work with young up & coming umpires! No, even better make him UMP little league. I guarantee you he would have a new found respect for the men in blue.

I know Manny outside the rink & I love the guy for what he has done for my family. His biggest knock has always been he could not step up when it matters most. Sadly we all saw that in this series. However he should not be the only one to shoulder the blame. The D played horrible in front of him, & the Forwards did not do enough to score. If both play better the pressure is off Legace & the outcome probably is different. I will miss Manny. In this town if the Goalie or QB doesn’t perform at a high level you will be “run out of town” & I expect that to happen here. (+ He is a free agent) The Oliers also deserve a lot of credit. I feel the way their regular season was at the end, fighting to get in, got them ready for the playoffs. The Wings pretty much coasted due to their regular season success & really never got into playoff mode. It cost them dearly. Yah the calls seemed to go against the Wings, but they put themselves in a position to let a bad call, brake or anything cost them. It did. You can debate the high stick & the kick, but in the end it was ruled a goal, so it was. I met Steve Y. once too & he told me “all refs are bad……………….” I just hope he plays one more year.

When Hank Aaron was set to pass the Babe there were a lot of racial facets, the time when he did, the general view by whites of blacks, the fact that a black man was going to take a record long held by a white sports icon. I do not feel this is the case with Bonds. He is paying the price for acting like a spoiled jerk throughout his career, & the steroid cloud. Lets put a hypothetical out there: If McGuire was set to pass Hammering Hank what do you think the community of people of color would be saying? I am sure there would be lots of race stuff (Just like the Babe vs. Bonds), but I am also sure that the talk would be: Did he do this because he cheated the system (Used something to increase his stamina & lengthen his career)? I do value Babe Ruth for his colorful life, in & out of baseball. Do I care his record is going to be broken by a black man? Hell NO! I just question whether the record is falling because the guy breaking it used an unfair scientific advantage!

Draper had quite a few bones in his face shattered not to mention the broken jaw. His back was clearly to The Turtle, hitting a player in that situation is a big no no. So much so in youth hockey some leagues require an actual stop sign patch on the back of players uniforms. If you see the sign, don’t delivery the check. Am I missing something here, wasn’t Moore’s neck broken because of the hit by TB? The other references of questionable or similar incidents did not result in a broken neck or any other broken bone (Beside the Draper thing) based on that alone this was the dirtiest play ever in the NHL. Maybe Mr. Moore would have thrived under the new NHL rules?

(He was 17 years old @ the time) The Pistons had the pick they took Darco with from a trade they had made 3 or 4 years before. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why this isn’t a good situation but I haven’t heard of any connection to Wayne other than his wife’s’ involvement. Guilty by association, maybe. Really what is the harm if she did place some bets for him? (Of coarse not on Hockey) Probably the hardest sport too put the “fix” in anyway However I have not heard this mentioned at all, or anyone make that leap. I assume RT got involved something along the lines of “ I know a lot of people betting why shouldn’t I cover their action & reap the profits?” Bookies don’t really make or lose money covering the bets, so much, the money comes in the form of the” juice” or so I have been told. Still not much of a story other than the name recognition

Most major news publications picked the Wings to be the team hardest hit by the cap, & to fall from the top of the Western conference. As we have seen this did not happen & many of the “new” players have contributed more than projected. When you factor in the ability of the Wings to mine talent from Europe & get more from players they bring in via free agency this organization will flourish as long as the front office is kept together, mainly Ken Holland, who learned his trade from Jimmy D (Architect of the Islanders dynasty) who is still with the team & Scotty Bowman, who has a role in gauging future talent. The older core talent is still there & they have brought up future core stars. This team will be great form many years to come.

Police it themselves meaning if you take an inappropriate run at somebody, swing your stick like a lumbar jack, run the goalie ect. You know that at some point an opposing player is going to confront (Front being the operative word with regard to this topic) & remind you in the form of a fight or physical confrontation that your play is unacceptable. Anything blow from behind (ie. Defenseless position such as the NFL does with WR’s) should get severe punishment. 20 game suspension without pay + a big fine would equate to sending a strong message that this type thing won’t be tolerated. The financial penalty in the salary cap NHL, would send that message. An enforcer type player doesn’t make the big dollars so in theory it should work. Visors have contributed to changing the game with regard to fighting; just a statement, that is true. Nothing more nothing less. Mrhockey: I think you need a new screen name as your comment makes it obvious to me that you don’t understand the game. Maybe Mrs. Hockey? Group hugs after the game? Flowers to the coaches? I don’t want to see a return to the Broad street bullies type NHL, but physical contact must remain in the game & if you understand the history of Hockey & the game itself, you would know that players always try to bend the rules a bit; get away with what you can kind of thing, the refs don’t catch everything or sometimes they “let ‘em play” Therefore the need for the players to Police it themselves & strong penalties for those that cross the line.

Bettman will never let the Wings move into the East. He will say we need the "draw" of Detriot to help grow the game & retain fans our West. The Wings are the most travled team in the NHL over the last 10 or 15 years. I think they could have won more Cups between '97 & '11 had they been in the East & always played 7 or 7:30 starts!
