Goodbye Dandy: Hallo Dandy, who was the longest surviving Grand National (wiki) winner was put down earlier this week, at the age of 33. Apart from winning that most famous of races the gelding also came to prominence in highlighting the neglect in the horse-racing industry as he ended up in the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre after being found in a distressing state. After that publicity the industry woke up a little and now 50p for every horse run in every race goes to the Rehabilitation of Racehorses charity.
Of course there are some who argue that the Grand National shouldn't be run at all. I don't agree, but think it could be made safer yet remain as testing a race as ever.
