The "King of the Mile" retires: Hicham El Guerrouj announces he has raced his last at the age of 31. El Guerrouj has dominated the 1500 and mile for a decade, winning four consecutive world titles, and the 2004 Olympic gold, at 1500 m. He is the current world record holder at 1500 m, one mile, and 2000 m. I could go on — one of the greatest runners of our or any era.

The best 1500 m outdoor times ever recorded. El Guerrouj made sub-3:30 seem routine.

The guy was amazing. It's sad he didn't feel like hanging on until the '08 Olympics, but he was a classy guy, and it was fun to watch him run for as long as he did it.

A killer of a distance. He made it look easy, when it obviously isn't.
