Ciao Pierluigi: Collina retires. In related news, Laetitia Casta "adore[s] football and the severity of referees." *tweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!*

This guy is a brilliant referee and will be sorely missed by the beautiful game. He never made any match about himself, never tried to be part of the game, but anyone watching couldn't ignore him. His handling of players and coaches in the games biggest of matches was always fair and just and when he have you that look, you knew you earned it. May his life be lightened by the wings of angels. Ciao.

I think he'll still be a part of the game, hopefully by becoming the premier trainer of referees so that his style and philosophy are spread directly from him.

This is a great loss to soccer. To ease our pain, you could've at least linked to Laetitia Casta. There. I feel better already.

He's good enough and scary enough that nobody talked back to him. The only referee I've seen celebrated on t-shirts by fans.
