No big surprises : in the first day of the WNBA 2005 playoffs, as second-seeded Seattle defeated third-seeded Houston 75-67 to take the first game of their western conference semifinal, while the East's #2 Indiana turned it on late to defeat #3 New York 63-51. The two other semifinal matchups, between LA and Sacramento in the west and Connecticut and Detroit in the east, get underway tonight. TV schedule here.

Say it isn't so the higher seeds won.

Say it isn't so the higher seeds won. Yup, as I said -- no big surprises. Oddly enough, tonight's matchups between the #1 and #4 teams might be closer contests. The "underdogs" are LA, a team that's won many championships in the past and whose members believe that they just deserve to be in it every year, and Detroit, last year's defending champs. I predict a couple of battles.

I'll take Detroit over Connecticut. This man for pres. Bill Laimbeer is indeed all that and a bag of chips, but the Shock aren't gonna do it this year. I only caught the last five minutes of this game, but three things really stood out: 1)Connecticut's ability to make shots despite incredibly tenacious coverage, 2)Detroit's inability to buy a shot, and 3)The obvious exhaustion of the Detroit players. I'm sticking by my prediction that this will be the only first-round matchup to go to three games, but that Connecticut will take it. BTW, I'm an idjit -- obviously the Shock aren't the defending champs, they were the '03 champs. Apologies to the ladies from Seattle.

My picks for the first round: Connecticut in three, Indiana in two, Sacramento in two, Seattle in two.
