Much Adu about Lalas' mouth: I like the big red one but I think he should have used his BrainFilter before stirring up DC United. Does he not remember Freddy is just 16?

Sounds like an illegal tapping, that's what.

You can't tap in MLS...

Kevin Payne seems to think so, according to the article.

There's tapping (or tampering, as Kevin Payne calls it) in every professional soccer league in the world (and some amateur). A team official simply can't go public with his desire to attract a player under contract with another team in the same league. When Lalas says "The MetroStars would love nothing more than to have Freddy Adu. He would certainly play in New York" and "I would love nothing more than for him to get fed up with D.C.", he's putting the thought into the kid's head that he will get more playing time and enhance his career in New York. He's obviously trying to sway him...and sell tickets. We'll see how it all shakes out but I would think Alexi will pay for this.

I lost a lot of respect for Lalas when he deserted the Earthquakes for greener pastures just when we had to deal with several major injuries, having barely dealt with major offseason transfers. He's also known for opening his mouth and saying crap that would generally better go unsaid. He'll get a fine, not a big one since he's probably not getting much salary, ad a stern talking to. This kind of thing is hardly shocking, though, when Anschutz owns half the teams, including both involved in the Adu dustup. Admittedly Phillip's support was probably the most important factor in the league's survival around the turn of the century and I appreciate that. With what seems to be a corner turn in fan and sponsor support, I hope new groups will step forward and take control of several franchises. Apparently we're going to have one such event here pretty soon.
