This needs to be made into a film and soon. I can hear it now: Jerry May: Doc he likes it high and inside, but he can't lay off low and away... Doc Ellis: Man, I'm trippin' balls... Jerry May: What? Doc Ellis: Huh? Oh, nuthin'. Dave Chappelle to the white courtesy phone please.

I agree - this is a tremendous piece. I remember Ellis as a really good pitcher and a controversial figure. It's a pity he didn't translate that intelligence and "dangerous" honesty into a more productive and long term force.

I was kinda young, but I remember hearing about Ellis and his somewhat interesting persona. I wish I had been old enough to appreciate him in his prime. But as they say, "better late than never!" Great piece!

It's a pity he didn't translate that intelligence and "dangerous" honesty into a more productive and long term force. Except he has become a drug counsellor working with people at risk and those in prison. That sounds very productive and useful. The article also confirms what I have heard from people involved in drug treatment - in the great majority of cases the person involved just decides to get off the gear. That is, one day they decide it's just not worth it any more and stop. For Dock Ellis it was when he picked up his new born son. There's probably something in this, but I guess this site isn't the place to debate the merits or otherwise of different drug treatment programs.

See?!? Another prime example of how drugs are just plain good for you. I threw a no hitter once while on acid. Oh, no wait, that was Dock Ellis. Huh? What day is it?
