Bend it like Beckham [RealVideo required].: BBC Soccer Academy has streaming video of Beckham (and other stars) teaching kids their soccer secrets. I liked Beckham's freekick class (the link for this post) and his passing class. Most of all, I just liked the kids (boys and girls) who were not just cute and earnest, but skillful. And watching Beckham coach gives you an insight into his leadership skills and likability. "Perfect. Brilliant. Oooh, unlucky. Finish with a goal. Brilliant. Perfect." And cheers to the Beeb for another example of sterling public service.

Isn't the BBC Real Player supposed to be the spyware free, less set on world domination version of the evil Real Player? Anyone know if this is true?

I think that the BBC real player is a webpage that uses the Real Networks player as a plugin. The BBC doesn't have their own software for it.

I can't believe all the comments so far are about Real, rather than the video. SpoFi: We b Geeks. Hahahahahahaha.

Believe this then. We can't watch the video because we refuse to install the evil Real Player on our machines. Whilst I think the BBC do a marvellous job in most instances, I think they've let us down here.

SpoFi: The BBC let us down.

OK, I've been really bored with the EPL break. Can't wait for this weekend. Man, I'm going to move up in the fantasy league!

Didn't everyone watch the national team games? You mean (to the Americans here) that the 1-1 draw against Panama, in the rain on a field so watersoaked that every pass died within 15 yards, when we only took the draw at the last with a goal from offsides, wasn't enough to hold you through? And to the Englanders, getting that amazing win away without having to pay for the viewing, how can you complain?

posted by billsaysthis at 08:37 PM on September 09, 2004

To everyone complaining: download Real Alternative. It works like a charm, and with none of the nagware or fuck-you-up-ware of the main version. I'm watching it right now, and you know? I gotta admit. The guy is downright charming.

Finally. Someone who actually watched the video. Heh.

Hey bill, i watched some of the Internationals. And i was going to PPV the Poland-England game but i was at work so...but it sounded like England got lucky.

posted by StarFucker at 03:42 PM on September 10, 2004

Well if you had PPV'd it, you'd know you're talking bollocks. Can't get that Real Alternative to install, get some error message about codecs. Is there an alternative Real Alternative? ;-)
