And the US flag-bearer is...: Dawn Staley of the US women's basketball team. Staley, with two gold medals and plenty of firsts and mosts to her name, is one of the game's all-time greats.

I liked the way she was properly humble in the news reports about this honor too. But how does she play for a team in one state and college for a university in another? Assuming you meant "coach", not "college" -- the WNBA season is in the summer. This year it'll be a bit of a struggle because the Olympic break is pushing the WNBA season into September, but usually that's about when they're wrapping up.

Temple is a major college and I would have expected her job to be 12 months--who trains the team while she is off in the WNBA? Are you telling me there is no overlap at all in the seasons?

There isn't. In fact, there's a pretty big gap in between. Nobody's got their '04-05 schedules up yet, but Temple's first game for the '03 season was on November 22, and the last game is, of course, in March. The WNBA regular season never begins until late May -- their rookies are almost all college graduates, remember -- and typically ends by the end of August, with playoffs after. This year, the regular season ends September 19 because of the Olympics. As for who coaches the team when she isn't there, there are also two assistant coaches. The big issue with her not being there twelve months is probably more recruiting than training, at a guess.

Okay, well...I just saw it, and I have two things to say: 1) Dawn looked just fine, but 2) That's the second 'lympics in a row where the US delegation was wearing clothes that made 'em look like a bunch of total dorks. I mean to say...I thought those godawful naugahyde-looking shiny blue jackets in SLC were bad. They looked like a buncha limo drivers from Jersey. But did you see what they were wearing in Athens??? Oh. My. God. They looked like they were dressed out of the Goodwill bin, except the ones who were big and broad, who looked like a bunch of fat little kids in sailor suits. Awful. Just awful.

Someone needs to tell Iverson that he doesn't need to thug it 24/7. You're at the Olympics - smile you spoiled little millionaire!
