I disagree... with the first paragraph, anyway. The cool thing about the Olympics is that small sports with no commercial appeal get serious and worldwide coverage. Judo, fencing, swimming, speed skating, etc. - the elite athletes in those sports get one chance to shine every four years.

Not sure if this has been discussed here, but the author of this piece, Franklin Foer has recently published an interesting-looking book titled How Soccer Explains the World : An Unlikely Theory of Globalization.
