Not sure if this has been discussed here, but the author of this piece, Franklin Foer has recently published an interesting-looking book titled How Soccer Explains the World : An Unlikely Theory of Globalization.

I disagree... with the first paragraph, anyway. The cool thing about the Olympics is that small sports with no commercial appeal get serious and worldwide coverage. Judo, fencing, swimming, speed skating, etc. - the elite athletes in those sports get one chance to shine every four years.
