Beltran to the Astros.: Dotel goes to the A's, with prospects (from the A's and Astros) to the Royals. Interesting development for the NL Central -- I thought for sure Beltran would end up in the AL East or NL West.
HOORAY! I didn't want him (for Gammo's rumored trade of Youkilis, Shoppach and SWilliamson for Beltran) and now he's out of the AL too (at least for this year). Dotel is a great pickup for Oakland though.

I'm just hoping Billy Beane can work his voodoo magic and convince some team's GM to take Rhodes. Rhodes can't work a decent inning, but he's working a pretty good trifecta of horrible contract, horrible performance, and horrible mouth: "We had two starters on this team say that the bullpen needs to step it up," Arthur Rhodes said. "You shouldn't say that. You shouldn't say that. If we lose as a team, we all lose. If we win as a team, we all win. You can't have two starters saying that. "If you're not man enough to come to somebody on the field and tell them to do a better job, don't say in the paper that we're doing a bad job. ... "It's one of those things where if they can do better, they can go nine innings. Let 'em go nine innings." Yeah, that's right motherf***er, you don't like blown saves, you just go nine innings! What a jerk. via AthleticsNation

If/when the Houston rotation finally work out their issues (Clemens aside), the Astros are going to steamroll the NL Central.

I am afraid this still doesn't change the fact that this guy will be in pinstripes come next year. As to Arthur Rhodes, that quote ("Let 'em go nine innings") is great. That's like a soccer team's forwards saying "If the goalkeeper thinks we don't give him enough goals support, maybe he should just score some goals himself." Wait a minute...

Sounds like the Astros are interested in Rhodes. The Beltran deal will help the Stros, but I don't think they'll steamroll the NL Central. Redbird Nation figures that Beltran will add about one extra win.

Dotel is a great pickup for Oakland though. And Oakland gave up nothing it'll ever miss, since the two things they already have are stud starting pitchers and a stud 3B.

Aaron Gleeman breaks down the trade very nicely: The Beltran Three-Way.

Is this another Randy Johnson deal for Houston? I know they have the talent to win, but they don't seem to apply themselves. I loved Jimy Williams as the Sox manager, but all those quirks seem like mistakes in retrospect (and I'm 100% with jerseygirl about not wanting to see the Sox dump Youk and Shoppach for 3 months of a Scott Boras client).

Woo hoo! We've got a closer! Arthur Rhodes has been an unmitigated disaster as a closer in Oakland.
