Tommy Salo has called it quits in the NHL.: He's going back to Sweden. And so the exodus begins...

Can you blame him? I think this is more a reflection of his individual situation rather than an indication of a mass exodus.

What exodus? Movement of, eh, people.

You mean this guy? Poor Tommy. Although I'm sure he gets a rougher ride in his homeland than here. It was the Olympics, after all.

What about his "individual situation" would cause him to run back to Sweden with his tail between his legs? I'm not up on his contract situation, but if he's under contract, and worried about being Aebischer's backup, then he needs to show in camp he's the top dog. And if he's a free agent, there are plenty of teams that could use a capable goalie. In any event, he's running away...whether the impending lockout is involved is beyond me, but don't kid yourself...there *will* be a mass exodus of players this summer if there is a stoppage, and it will get worse as September 16th approaches...

I don't think Salo should give up so easily. He can be an NHL goalie (and he was not too long ago). However, he's had a decidedly rough year and I don't blame him for heading home. I think there obviously will be a stoppage. This league needs a serious enema. How do we lock out Lemaire (and his assorted disciples) for, like, ever?

I'm not up on his contract situation... That's what the article is for: Salo had an option year on a $4 million contract for next season, a figure the Avalanche are likely to decline.

What about his "individual situation" would cause him to run back to Sweden with his tail between his legs? It's not like he's in the prime of a flourishing career, with a fat contract and a good position on a solid team. His game has gone downhill since the Olympics. His contract's up this year. It's possible that he could get a number one job on a team somewhere, but maybe that's not the kind of starting-over that he's looking for. He obviously hasn't been comfortable in the NHL over the past couple of years, so he's leaving. I wouldn't be surprised even if there was no change of a labour stoppage.
