The Cardinals and Braves open the winter meetings ... : in a trade that may or may not help both teams. J. D. Drew and Eli Marrero head south to fill holes in Atlanta, while Jason Marquis, Ray King and Adam Wainwright bolster the Cardinal pitching staff. Who wins this deal?
Moral of the story: You can gamble by giving away a bat. But you can never gamble by giving away an arm.

As a Cards fan, I like this trade. It's dealing from a strength to fill a need.

I'm interested in Wainwright. I hear he's going to be quite a ballplayer.

As a Braves follower, their biggest loss here is definitely Wainwright. He was supposed to be the next big thing in their rotation. Marquis should be a good #3 or 4 pitcher given the chance.

King used to pitch relief for Milwaukee, in the 2002 season. Everyone talked about what a great left-handed reliever he was, but it seemed everytime he took the mound he gave up 4 runs. Last year we tossed him to Atlanta for Wes Helms, I believe. Which worked out well for us. Wes is great.

The Cardinals may have finished their moves for the offseason by signing Reggie Sanders, whose picture appears next to "well-traveled" in the dictionary. I'm pleased by this, especially since Jose Guillen went to Anaheim. Oh, and Jgirl? Congrats on landing Mark Bellhorn, who I think will fare well in Beantown.

Tough to say who "won" this. JD Drew is a good bat (occasionally) but the Cardinals have plenty of those and really, really need pitching. Marrero is OK for a catcher but his stats stink in the OF, so his value is tied to where he plays. Marquis may be OK, given a shot. I don't know much about the kid and Ray King. This is definietely a wait and see how it shakes out deal but on the surface I'll say advantage St. Louis, as they addressed a big need (pitching) and they have plenty of sticks to cover the loss of Drew.
