Pedro Martinez holds press conference in the Dominican Republic.: Briefly discusses Manny and the free agent market, then throws Grady under the bus. He then reiterates that he wants to finish career in Boston and the media misinterprets his comments from last season. All this while while looking snazzy in tinted lenses and suit.

Welp. he's had a month of Grady blaming the debacle on him -- I can't blame him for getting sick of that. Standing up for your manager is one thing; standing up for him while he's throwing you to the wolves is another.

Guess that's true enough Bryant. Pedro's not been one to talk to the media, so it was a bit odd. Here's a bit more coverage with the ESPN article (ignore the mistake in the story that says Little put Timlin in for relief when the game was tied). I like Pedro. A lot. He's kind of a pain in the ass sometimes, takes things too personally, tosses out the Dominican race card fecklessly at times. Yeah, he'll brush you back off the plate or point at your head in some pseudo threat and maybe he's earned the moniker, Fenway Punk... but I still like him. Despite the mild mannered tone of the reports from the press conference that could massage this theory otherwise, I have some serious doubts he's going to go for the whole market-correction notion, settling for another contract of something in the less than $17.5m range. The CHB is going to have a field day with this one.

I'm a big Pedro fan. I don't know that I'd wanna go out drinking with the guy, but I will never ever forgot the Indians in 1999. No matter what. I think this quote is from a followup news conference: "I have to understand that if I'm not putting up the same numbers I put up from 1997 to 2000, I'll probably get a little decrease in salary," he said. "But it's still good money, so I'll just settle for whatever the market has to offer and enjoy the game." Globe article is here. I love that he wants to sign inside the Green Monster only after he wins a Series.

I find it odd that weeks later, he throws his own press conference to talk about himself. And he also changes his original story about Game 7 in which he says he wanted to stay in, "if you want to blame anyone, blame me". I hope his desire to finish his career in Boston also includes a bit of rational thought regarding salary when it comes to negotiating that contract.
