Adonal Foyle : was named Best Reason to Like the [Golden State] Warriors in SF Weekly's Best of San Francisco 2003 issue "for his name, for his sound defensive technique, and especially for his social conscience." And his poetry:

I miss the cocks that shout out loud
Arise, arise you wretched sloth.
The day has dawned and passeth by
Dragging night's drape across the cloud.

On a semi-related note, I lived in San Francisco for about six years before I realized that the Golden State Warriors are in Oakland.

HAhahahahaha! Brilliant. Hey, maybe you and billsaysthis and I can get together for the NBA finals or something. After bill gets back from his honeymoon. Or something.

I know ... I just don't remember ever seeing that word in a poem before. How many NBA players have sat in on a discussion panel dealing with free speech, though? I'm not a big NBA fan, but I'll be paying a little more attention to Foyle in the future. Thanks for the post.

A KRON 4 article (including video clip!) on Adonal Foyle's political interests and ambitions.

To most Warrior fans, Adonal Foyle is just another ball player who is doing what he does best. But when he's not blocking, stuffing and driving on the basketball court he's holding court. Today, it's a political science class at UC Berkeley. Adonal founded Democracy Matters to encourage students to speak their minds about political issues and take a stand on them. ... Hard work paid off, on and off the court. Adonal graduated from Colgate University magna cum laude and now he looks to inspire other students. All this for a man who never thought he'd play in the NBA. "I didn't think I was good enough to be an NBA player, so I wanted to get a good education just in case and I end up getting both," he says, "I got to the NBA and got a great education in the process." Adonal hopes to continue his education after basketball and get a law degree and his US citizenship.
Contrast this with all the Lebron Jameses of the world. It'll be interesting to see how they're doing five years after their retirement from the pros.
