I think that most of the photos are actually just good ol' fashioned hawt rough trade.

#8 really makes it tough to argue that fighting in hockey is purely an act of enforcement, and not meant to injure the other player.
Hockey is real tough to play with only one eye!

I thought about that as well, dviking, but it is a still image and it's hard to guarantee that the thumb was intentional. Just like all the still of players punching helmets, I suspect that the helmet wasn't the intended target or technique. Hockey fights happen very fast and are usually a flurry of swings where most don't connect with anything at all, much less hit in the exact spot intended. Before I make the assumption of intent to injure there, I'd like to see the 15 seconds prior and 15 seconds after the image of that fight.
After looking at it again, it appears he may be grabbing the helmet of Boogard, not doing a Three Stooges imitation.

Bo, i was only giving joshing...I doubt the guy was really intending to put out the other guy's eye.
Either way, it does point out the dangers of the fights. At least boxers wear large padded gloves.
I love the expression, and hair, on photo #25.

Boxers wear large padded gloves to prevent themselves from breaking their hands when they punch. The gloves allow them to hit harder. The other guy's head is a lot harder than your hand.
Gloved fights cause more severe injury than bare knuckle fights.
Pontification aside, great photos.

jj, never was debating that, so thanks for the update.
My only point was that it's harder to gouge a guy's eyes out while wearing boxing gloves.

Is it any wonder that the debate about the place of fighting in hockey seems to be losing a lot of its steam as of late? This photo essay is just one of the MANY ways we celebrate the brawlers in pro hockey. And yeah, punching helmets with bare knuckles can cause pretty severe injuries ... to the puncher.
