Baseball on National TV: The quality of announcers
In reading some comments by "Jersey Girl" I have realized that I am not alone in my feelings of EPSN and Fox. Both network's goal is ENTERTAINMET. How Polker and Dominoes can be considered sports, boggles my old imagination. I grew up in the Boston area. I started hearing Red Sox and Braves games around 1945 or 46. I was four at the time. When I started to understand the game I would listen to Curt Gowdy. I don't have to say anymore. When TV came along, Curt did the telecasts. Since that time we have had some good announcers. I met and talked to Ned Martin a few times. He was interested in the game, not in showing how much he thought he knew. "The important thing is THE GAME," he used to say. I remember him announcing Roger Clemens 20 strike out game in 1986. Since him we've had Ken Coleman, Sean McDonough (MR ARROGANT) and others I can't remember. Now we have Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy who add humor and personal tid-bits. They don't take themselves to seriously. They poke fun at everyone. The announcers on National TV however think that they are the greatest things to ever come along. With the exception of maybe Joe Buck, the rest are a bunch of idiots, in my view. They want to show you how much they (think) they know. The game doesn't matter. All ESPN cares about is home runs and bigness of the players. This past Monday the announcer made the statement that Randy Johnson was not going to appeal his suspension. Therefore he could pitch next Monday night against the Braves. "That's we want on our games, the stars." I yelled at the TV, "You f-ing a--hole." The game doesn't matter. The ream doesn't matter. Just the "stars." This is long enough, I hope you get the gist of what I am trying to say. Thanks
