Ashes Fantasy Contest : Standings after the First Test. Looks like the Australians are on top here, too.

Those with Ponting did very well. However, there are four more Tests to go, and the scoring is volatile, especially amongst the English where improvement is expected. And everyone is still alive in the Pick 'Em for the series result. I wish I could format better. Current Standings: onyanellie 561 owlhouse 548 Mr Bismarck 512 cabuki 506 The Black Hand 485 gspm 476 Ying Yang Mafia 464 skydivemom 463 Weedy McSmokey 456 afx237vi 384 Fat Buddha 360 No Mich 347 skydivedad 292 apoch 250 JJ 237

I wish I knew what I am doing.

You're doing well, YYM, hang in there. I should have posted this, too: Full scorecard here.

So I'm not entirely out of the running yet?

By no means apoch. Your players (particulalrly Gilchrist who got a duck) didn't perform as well in the First Test, but they still have plenty of opportunities. Like baseball, you can have an off day at the plate, but then go 4 for 5 the next time.

YYM - trust me, knowing what you're doing has no bearing on this whatsoever (not that I do, obviously). Owlhouse - do you know how uncool it would be to win your own competition?

Terrifically uncool, I know. But onyanellie has picked well, and she will be hard to dislodge. And the English hook shots are starting to worry me, and with them the selection of Pietersen that you warned me about.

In retrospect, it was perhaps foolish of me to warn you against Pieterson and yet pick Strauss (another dodgy hooker who finds it hard to resist the pull shot) myself. Thought this was an amusing line from Giles Smith in the Times this week: "Michael Holding got to give us another of his estimable inspections of the pitch, one in which he revealed cracks so wide and deep that they swallowed his biro from clicker to nib. England had been hoping the ground would open up and swallow them, and lo and behold, the ground was suddenly looking as though it might oblige."

Does anyone actually know onyanellie or is she (he?) just a mysterious stranger who has appeared just for this competition?

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 05:15 PM on November 29, 2006

onyanellie has made one lockerroom comment and it was to pick their players in this pool.

I'll leave it for onyanellie to 'fess up properly, but she does exist, is a cricket fan, and I understand even has tickets to the Melbourne Test.

But does she fetch beer and pies?

So you brought in an expert to beat us all - I see how you are owlhouse. You were worried the Americans would beat you and you couldn't have an winner who was not an Aussie. I don't know about everyone else but it sounds pretty suspicious to me.
