Gotta give a shout out: to Mike Fiers for throwing a no hitter at the Dodgers on Friday. Walked 3, one in each of the first 3 innings, and retired the last 21 he faced. Nolan (7 no-nos) Ryan was there, and they met after the game. Seems like a good trading deadline pickup for the Astros.

A bit of history: The first Horse racing Triple crown in 37 years. Despite less than astounding times, American Pharoah joined a club of now 12 horse to win the Triple Crown yesterday. There will be some debate whether he belongs in the Pantheon of the best ever, but he did successfully face the challenge he faced. With the changes in the breeding of Thoroughbreds over the last 20 years or so, ( inbreeding, speed being valued over stamina, Lasix types of diuretics,) it may well be another 37 years before we see this accomplishment repeated. I felt a pleasure watching him break away down the stretch while so many have faded over the years. This bay colt is one fabulous athlete.

Trajedy at West Point: Maggie Dixon, 28, suffered an arrhythmia heart episode on Wednesday at West Point, leaving her in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. Thursday night, she died at age 28. Maggie had just taken her women's basketball team to the NCAA tournament for the first time in the program's history. She was also half of the first brother-sister combo to coach teams in that tourney in the same year.

Hawaii wins NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship!: Granted, it's an obscure sport to many, but this first men's NCAA championship has created a great deal of excitement here in the islands.
