/OT boy, there's some pretty ... risque pictures up on the official world cup site. Those crazy brazilians.

sheesh. the duncan / baylor thing is bad enough, and then to have morris jump in with a threat? Morris is right with his 'bush-league' comment, but it's him and duncan that are acting bush-league.

This is actually a very interesting topic. While I agree that there's something to the billy beane / rob neyer approach to baseball, it's a little bit bittersweet for me. Sweet in that I'm a bit of a stathead myself, bitter because it smells a little bit like Frederick Taylor style scientific management applied to baseball. And just like scientific management, it overlooks all factors that are not readily quantifiable. And baseball, like life, is not deterministic. It just seems to me that this approach to baseball takes some of the 'game' out of the game.

Heh, that's great. I love it. (said as a 'whitey'). Maybe they should have named themselves 'the colonizers' or something. just to push the caricature a little farther. Or maybe 'whiteskins'. [btw the greeley tribune site seems to be down too. here's another link to a story with a picture.]

the statement about jacksonville is a little misleading. it says that jacksonville is the smallest metro area with a population over 1 million to have a professional sports team. Green bay is by far the smallest.

alas, I'm still waiting for my poor cubbies to do something. if the cubs ever actually win the world series (or the red sox i suppose) you're probably going to see a lot of this "now i can die in peace" sentiment.

Great link. I found the story on swingley fascinating. I've never really contemplated the "culture of iditarod" before. didn't realize they were so... wary of outsiders. On a different note, apparently Minnesota's Beargrease 500 had to be postponed due to lack of snow.

In my opinion, the best resolution to this thing is if donald watkins buys the twins and follows through on his promise of a privately funded stadium, and the expos move to washington.

I got the impression that it's not even a matter of remote control. I think the robots are supposed to "play" themselves. from the rules of the mid-sized competition: Manual interaction with the robots, either directly or via some communications mechanism, is not permitted except during kick-off, restart, and finish of the game or when ordered by the referee. The referee may order robot attendants to enter the field and slightly separate entangled robots. Dead robots, as judged by the referee, must be removed from the field. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like you're just supposed to set up the robots and then watch them play.

Cubs Fans, Dash Any And All Hope Now...
well, I'm not incredibly happy about the cubs grabbing some more under-producing veterans, but like bag man, i'm glad to get rid of hundley. And the article explicitly states that grudzielanek is likely to be a backup for Hill, and chicagosports.com says that karros is supposed to be a right-handed sub at first base. My guess (or rather, my hope) is that the left-handed choi will get most of the at-bats. So while I don't think it's a great deal, I don't think it's as bad as you've claimed.
