Hidden: Mets beat Reds for 10th straight win; take first : CINCINNATI - David Wright's two-run homer in the ninth inning rallied the Mets to their 10th straight victory Thursday night, a 10-8 win over the Cincinnati Reds that moved once-languishing New York back into first place in the NL East. Playing on the one-month anniversary of manager Willie Randolph's firing, (EDIT)...They were 6 1/2 games out when they changed managers, fearful that they were playing themselves out of contention with an underachieving offense.

I have never had much faith in the idea of changing a manager for a MLB franchise in the middle of a season, primarily because I believe that players win games; managers have VERY little to do with it. However, the Met's managerial change this year appears to have motivated more than a few players. I tried to search online to find if there had been a team prior to this year that had changed managers after 60 games and won the division and/or pennant, but I was unable to find any hard stats. Does anyone have an example where this happened? What are your opinions of this sudden turnaround in NY? Pretty much the same players; Nixon and Alou on the DL; Pedro's performances since his return not being a factor, etc. The only real change has been the manager.
