At first, the job as clinical director at Alcor Life Extension Foundation was an exciting change for veteran paramedic Larry Johnson: a well-funded research facility pushing the limits of modern biotech. But as he gained the trust of his eccentric coworkers and was promoted to acting COO, Larry was thrust into a nightmare world of scandalous controversy, gruesome practices, and deadly secrets.

One secret Larry unearthed was the full, tragic, never-before-heard story of what truly happened to the body of baseball icon and American hero Ted Williams.

Compelled by this and other horrific discoveries, Larry began copying documents, taking secret pictures, and ultimately wearing a wire every day at Alcor. He started living two lives—“Alcorian” by day, whistleblower by night.

Beyond the senseless animal experiments, beyond the dumping of toxic chemicals and AIDS-contaminated blood into the public sewage system, these people saw themselves as the elite, the immortal saviors of mankind who would lead us into the future. Inside this cultlike mentality, anything seemed justified. Maybe even murder.

Then Alcor found out. The death threats began.

Fleeing from state to state, Larry was stalked and threatened again and again. They chased him through the streets. They left death threats under his windshield wipers. They terrorized his family. Larry Johnson never wanted to be a whistleblower. But he knows this story must be told.

Written in Larry’s own memorable voice, illustrated with never-before-seen photographs from inside Alcor, and verified by actual transcripts of his “secret recordings,” Frozen reads like a medical thriller—but every word is shockingly true.

He was chief flight paramedic at the Waco, Texas, siege, has served as keynote speaker at national medical conferences, and was a contributing author for Prentice Hall’s 2005 Critical Care Paramedic, the most widely used textbook of its kind. I had first heard of Larry's book while reading an article on an EMS website. Prior to actually receiving the book I spent a good amount of time researching cryonics and became fascinated with it. I read quite a few of Alcor's news letters where they seem to detail some of the issues they encounter when "suspending" a patient; many of the same issues and concerns brought up by Larry.

After I received the book, I couldn't put it down. It is well written and immediately sucks you in to the crazy and scary world of cryonics. I anticipated it would be a good read and was not disappointed. I can see where some will claim that the book was only done for a profit, but once you learn more about what was going on, you will probably think differently.

I highly recommend this book!! If you like thrillers and suspense this is a book for you. Knowing that this is all real makes it that much better!

I am a medical professional, with nearly a decade in performing hypothermic medical procedures, who has also worked in cryonics. The first 100 pages, or so, of Mr. Johnson's book were virtually identical to my own experience at Suspended Animation, in Boynton Beach, Florida, a company with close ties to Alcor. Cryonics is rife with what I consider to be self-delusional "overgrown adolescents" who think that putting on scrubs, or a white labcoat, magically transforms one into a medical professional, capable of performing complex medical procedures and making scientific history. The people performing cryonics procedures, for the most part, have little-to-no medical training, or experience, yet they are paid the same, or more, than many of their qualified counterparts. They pay their "consultants" HUGE sums of money for designing DIY medical equipment, when there are superior FDA-approved devices available for a much lower cost, and they call that "research." It wouldn't be uncommon to have someone who was actually trained as a golf pro, and two fabricators from the DIY equipment workshop, show up to do the initial steps of a cryopreservation, (in fact that DID happen, in 2007). Cryonics patient care providers regularly make serious errors that were all-but-eliminated, decades ago, in very similar conventional medical procedures, and it's time for that to stop.

I respect the wishes of those who wish to be cryopreserved, and I believe even the "legally dead" deserve competent medical care, especially when many of them are directing $100K, or more, either of their own money, or of their life insurance, to pay for the gross, negligent errors of these amateurs playing doctor.

I read the book, from front to back, last night, and I don't believe Mr. Johnson is lying about anything.

*EDIT: I don't usually like editing something I have previously written, because I have accused others of attempting to rewrite history, when they have done that. In response to one of the comments on my review: I stand by my comment that I don't believe Mr. Johnson is lying about anything, HOWEVER, there are some stories told in the book, that are clearly unsubstantiated information he received from other sources. Johnson indicates he communicated with Alan Kunzman, (a former Riverside County Coroner Investigator and the author of "Mothermelters), who allegedly told him (Johnson) that an informant told him (Kunzman) that David Pizer and the Venturists kept weapons in underground bunkers. I don't think Johnson is lying, when he repeats the information that allegedly came from Kunzman, but that information seems unreliable, to me, and I have never heard any such stories about Mr. Pizer, or his associates, from anyone I know in cryonics. I believe there were people threatening Johnson at the time he recounted the stories he had been told, and I believe he was probably scared out of his mind.

In spite of the few unsubtantiated stories he recounted, I believe Johnson has a mountain of evidence, in the form of documents, photographs and audio recordings, of incompetent, unprofessional, unethical and illegal activities, on the part of Alcor. I also believe Alcor is is being dishonest, in their attempts to defend their organization. For example, Alcor recently issued a statement attempting to discredit Johnson by saying his accusations of them using hammers and chisels to separate heads from bodies were false and that they were using "medical mallets" and "osteotomes." I've seen the pictures. They are using a ball peen hammer with a wooden handle, (something impossible to sterilize, that would never be used in surgery by REAL medical professionals), not a medical mallet. Also, on the day of the ABC Nightline broadcast, someone claiming to be a nurse called ABC, in an attempt to discredit Johnson's account of a 1992 AIDS patient whose death may have been hastened. The caller stated the patient died in his bedroom, with only his partner and nurse, but Alcor's own case report (published on the Internet) contradicts this, and seems to validate what Johnson reported. Alcor clearly states that the only AIDS patient they had, in 1992, died in a makeshift operating room, in a garage. I wrote more about this, on my blog, and I will continue to blog about the lies I believe are being told in an attempt to discredit Mr. Johnson. Mr. Johnson, his co-author and/or his publisher have published some of the audiotapes on a website, for this book, and you can clearly hear one Alcor executive's total lack of regard for OSHA standards, when he states his only concerns are with Johnson documenting the issue in writing, or photographers catching Alcor in the act of dumping biohazardous waste into the city's drainage system.

Frozen: My Journey Into The World of Cyronics, Deception, and Death is an interesting read, but not as much about the world of cryonics itself, as it is about the dirty secrets being unveiled at Alcor Life Extension Foundation. The book has a solid introduction with Larry Johnson giving you his background as a paramedic for 25 years, and how he came about cryonics. What it is lacking is the specifics about cryonic preservation. Granted, he does give you details here and there about temperatures and the processes they go through to preserve a body, but if you are looking for a read that will further expand your knowledge behind the science alone, this book will not necessarily scratch those itches. What it does do well is keep your interest in a life of someone working in a field not commonly known with some rather horrifying incidents along the way. You learn a little, how the day-to-day ran at Alcor, what some of the processes were to prepare the corpses, and tidbits of the technicalities, but if you are looking for say, a thorough how-to sort of guide to study on, this is not your bible. In saying that though, if you are interested in a well written and intriguing read, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up a copy.

Having actually read FROZEN (unlike, I believe, many of the one star reviews), I strongly recommend it. Make no mistake - the book is alarming and disturbing. It is a frightening journey into the pseudo-science of cryonics, which many of us know through urban myths and humor. The truth is eye-opening, scary, and hopefully will make you question the legitimacy of these Alcorians. Johnson and Baldyga should be lauded for their courage and tenacity in bringing this macabre story to light.

FROZEN is not, however, a dry expose; a rehashing of taped conversations and analysis of copied documents. It is a taut, gripping story, and reads as a captivating thriller. It is, quite frankly, better than most fiction in this genre, not the least because its verifiably true.

While I certainly hope this book brings Alcor and its crimes to light (and justice), I nevertheless would not hesitate to read more work from these authors.
