Strong Out, Herman In (probably): Charlie Strong was officially fired today as head coach of the University of Texas Longhorns, and sources immediately started saying that the contract is all but signed for Texas to hire Tom Herman, currently head coach of the University of Houston Cougars. Herman started his coaching career at UT and has been the UH coach for just two years, going 13-1 in his first season with a bowl win over Florida State.
Why is the ACC Network showing a basketball score for this Syracuse/Pitt football game?

The score is too high for basketball even. /Virginia fan

College programs sure fall in love with trendy coaches quickly. Herman only has two years as a head coach to his name.

As an LSU fan, I'm pretty happy with the Tigers going with Orgeron, particularly if he can get a top-shelf offensive coordinator in place (and LSU should have decent money to spend on assistants considering that Oregeron's $3MM per year is well below what they would have paid Herman or another in-demand coach). I think college football is better when there is a little bit of crazy down in Baton Rouge. And it's not like anyone is going to have sustained success at the top of the SEC West as long as Saban is at Alabama, so might as well roll the dice and have some fun.

I agree, and let the record show that Orgeron will be paid the same amount that Muschamp is being paid to sustain a strong odor in Columbia. LSU is getting much better value for their coaching dollar.
You toss the two of 'em in a bag and add Rich Rod, and that gets you to the annual salary level of Jim Harbaugh, which is beyond insane. Once you get above 6 mil per year, for the few that are up there, the money difference becomes exponential for some reason, and almost imaginary.
I think I had previously pegged Helfrich's buyout at around 3 mil but saw it reported earlier today at 11 mil plus, so I'm not sure what the accurate figure is on that. 11 sounds awfully high.

Seems as though when LSU came calling to Herman, it was a heaven sent leveraging ploy for him to use in his talks with Texas.
Might add an extra 1.5 mil or so per annum to the deal Herman gets from UT.
And it's not like Houston doesn't have money to throw around when they go to replace Herman.
Is there an analysis somewhere that compares the escalating value of coaches' compensation packages with the recent budgetary history of state programs and services? Louisiana's comparison should be an eye opener.
