CFL Playoff Pick 'Em, Semi-Finals Edition: It's snowing in Toronto and the Edmonton Eskimos have an injured quarterback: two sure signs that yes, it is indeed time for the CFL playoffs! All summer long you wistfully watched the hot pick 'em action from afar; now's your chance to join the fray. It's a new season and everybody starts at zero (or with the exchange rate, 0.0000142 US), so grab your twelfth man and make your picks inside.

B.C. Lions (9-9) @ Montreal Alouettes (9-9) (Sunday, November 16)

All season long it's been a story of two divisions, so what better way to kick things off than a crossover? In what was supposed to be a lost year for the Lions, Kevin Glenn has done just enough in what could very well be his last kick at the can. Some key early wins in the West, combined with a bunch of points against the East have given them just enough to make the playoffs. But they're not exactly underdogs against this strange Montreal team, which was 1-7 at midseason, and has put together an incredibly unlikely string of victories at the hands of rookie CFLer Jonathan Crompton. So I have a feeling this one will come down to defence.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8) @ Edmonton Eskimos (12-6) (Sunday, November 16)

Two ambitious teams held back by injuries: Saskatchewan, your defending Grey Cup champions, were off to a hot start and looking to repeat, until they lost star QB Damien Durant at midseason and were forced to bring Kerry Joseph out of retirement. It's been a tough slog for them since, and they come into the playoffs having lost five of their last six games. Edmonton's rising star QB Mike Reilly has kept them in the picture all season long; with a few more breaks, they easily could've taken the division lead. But speaking of breaks, that same Reilly suffered a broken foot bone two weeks ago, and is highly questionable for this game.

Pick the kicker who will score the most points this weekend. That includes place-kick field goals, drop-kick field goals, PATs, singles, and fake field goals thrown for touchdowns.

Las Vegas Posse Memorial Bonus

The combined over/under on total points scored for both games is 90.5. Will the actual number of points scored this weekend be OVER or UNDER that total?

Example pick: Montreal by 21, Saskatchewan by 14, Whyte, Over.

Good luck!

Nearly missed this. I'm in Maine for the weekend for a getaway with my wife. WiFi at the hotel sucks, so I nearly gave up on the web. Fortunately it did not happen. Wife is glaring at me trying to get me interested in going out for dinner, so I'll be forced to keep this short.

BC at Montreal: "The Lion in Winter" was one of the better films ever made, but Lions in Montreal during the late autumn might not be so good. Larks seem to have made some repairs to their wings, have turned their season around, and have momentum on their side. Never sell an old cat short, but I don't think their claws are sharp enough. Montreal by 9.

Saskatchewan at Edmonton: Ah the joys of winter on the prairie. The weather says they should take off the pads, put on the skates, and go play some hockey. Eskimos have a wounded lead dog, but is this critical? Roughriders will give this a good shot, but they will fall short at the end. Edmonton by 11.

Kickers are a necessary evil. I miss the old substitution rules that meant the kicker had to play a position. Nonetheless, they are like a parasitic presence that has invaded us and is here to stay. I'll have to pick one of the booters in the Montreal game, since the condtions in Edmonton aren't likely to favor the foot brigade. Whyte.

Once again the weather conditions enter into the picks. This is the time for black and blue football, not the wide open game. I'll take the under here.
