CFL Pick 'Em, Week 17: Mass hysteria reigns as almost everyone is still in the mix. Well, in the CFL anyway; perhaps not so much in our standings. But that's no reason to not make your picks inside.

Is it really Friday afternoon again? When you get to be my age, the time certainly does fly; after all, a week represents just a tiny percentage of my elapsed time on earth. Having reflected on my mortality, it is time to reflect on football mortality. Some teams will live and some will die this week. A few teams are the walking dead, but that sounds like the plot for a very bad movie (Zombies of the Gridiron is my working title for the screenplay). Let's try to separate the breathing from the gasping:
Eskimos at Argonauts is a game that has a team that is quite alive against a zombie. There are 10 recommended ways to kill a zombie, but most of them cannot be used on a football field. The crowbar to the skull is possible as a metaphor for a persistent offense, and the starvation of the beast could be interpreted as using a strong defense. I'll bet Edmonton has read the anti-zombie manual and will succeed. Eskimos win by 14.
Saskatchewan at Calgary features 2 teams that have attained walking dead status. Fights between zombies just don't show up too often in horror films. The only one I could find was on YouTube, and it was actually something videoed at an acting class. There are lots of fights between zombies and vampires, and such like, but zombie vs zombie? So we'll just have to guess at this one. Stampeders have shown a few signs of life in their losses, while the Rough Riders keep falling down San Juan Hill. I'll pick the Stamps to win by 12.
Montreal at Winnipeg has 2 teams that are well away from zombie territory. These 2 could put on a really good show on Saturday afternoon, and if the New Hampshire Episcopal Diocesan Convention gets over soon enough, I might get to see the second half. Winnipeg will have a bit more to play for, and being at home, Blue Bombers will hold on to win by 3.
There's a cat fight in Hamilton Saturday night. The striped kitties will scratch and claw, but the bigger tawny cats from the west will be too much for them. BC will win by 4.

First of all: HUGE thanks to Reever for steering the ship in my absence. Everything ran nice and smoothly, so much so that I'm considering just going back to Italy for another three weeks. Thanks Reever!
Second, an erratum: there was a miscalculation on the Week 14 Hamilton-Toronto Margin of Error which resulted in some players getting an extra point. I've fixed it up in this week's totals. Please do double-check your points to make sure everything is kosher. Thanks!
Onto the games!
Toronto kicks their way to victory over Calgary. Edmonton takes care of business at home against Winnipeg. Montreal hangs on against Hamilton to grab sole possession of first place in the East, while B.C. completes the comeback to keep their impressive winning streak alive.
With three weeks left to play, it seems like everyone is still within spitting distance of first place.
WEEK 17
Edmonton @ Toronto (Friday, October 21)
Edmonton's still locked in a tie with B.C. for first place, and would seem to have the advantage in playing Toronto this week. But sometimes those opponents with nothing to lose are the most dangerous... right?
Saskatchewan @ Calgary (Friday, October 21)
Saskatchewan has just stunk it up lately. But Calgary lost to Toronto last week, so maybe we call it even?
Montreal @ Winnipeg (Saturday, October 22)
This is Winnipeg's best chance to get back into first. But Montreal seems to have found their groove at exactly the right time.
B.C. @ Hamilton (Saturday, October 22)
Hamilton's still in the running for a home playoff game. But this week, they're staring at the fresh juggernaut that is your 2011 B.C. Lions.
