Casey steps in, connects: Goes to bat to help feed hungry: When Sean Casey left Fenway Park following Monday night’s game against the Red Sox, the Detroit first baseman didn’t return to the team hotel with the rest of the Tigers. Instead, he caught a ride to Lawrence in anticipation of a 6 a.m. wake-up call to prepare to feed the hungry at Cor Unum Meal Center.

It's such a shame how no one seems interested in an athlete when it's on the positive side. I guess it's true that negativity is more of a hot topic nowadays. Great to see Sean Casey doing his thing like this.

That's a rather broad presumption, BornIcon.

I think it is outstanding and yes BornIcon people are interested. At least I am and last I knew I was a people. I don't post much on spofi but something like this needs to be recognized! Thanks for posting it!

Yerfatma, condolences on your previous effort Which is what I was speaking of. I should've clarified myself. Seeing that yerfatma actually posted something about this back on June 13, 2005 and only 1 individual left a comment, it had me thinking about how many people respond when it's rather on the negative. Seriously. Think about it.

I didn't know much about Casey before he became a Tiger. I've learned about him as a player since then, but it's great to know he's a good human being as well as a good athlete. It's finally fun being a 'gers fan again, but this puts an even bigger smile on my face.

There's a reason he was known as "the mayor" back in Cincinnati. Just a hell of a likeable guy. Cynicism aside, thanks for posting that BI.

it had me thinking about how many people respond when it's rather on the negative. It's a lot easier to have something semi-original to say about a negative story than about a positive one. There are only two responses to a positive story: 1. "Good for him." 2. "This is a crock and [good person] is an awful person. Sincerely yours, Christopher Hitchens."

It's a lot easier to have something semi-original to say about a negative story than about a positive one Not necessarily. There are many 'semi-original' things to say about a positive story than a negative one. IMO, I believe it just takes a little bit more creativity to do so than with a negative story. Maybe this is a bad example but this is all I can think of at the moment: A car accident. When people see a car accident, not all but most people will slow down just to get a 'better look' to see what happened than they would if someone was on the side of the road in need of assistance because of a flat tire. I truly don't want to come across as some goody-two-shoes because I can honestly put myself in the category of the people that slow down to see what happened at an accident (it's the volunteer firefighter in me, I guess) but I do applaud Sean Casey for all his efforts. Yerfatma deserves more credit on this story than I do since he actually was 2 years ahead of me but thank you.

Reminds me of Dave Stewart. There's a man who looks like he punches babies, when he was on the mound - as intimidating as anyone - but off it, a guy who did thousands of hours of community work. Hell, after he was traded by the Jays - he would still come back at his own expense for the next three years and hand out Thanksgiving turkeys and meals to the homeless. He was only a Jay for, what, two-three years total? Just a very committed dude. I'd call him selfless, but the truth is I think he really enjoyed doing it. I think that makes him the right kind of selfish. fatty's right though - just because there aren't a lot of comments doesn't mean the story isn't get read and enjoyed - it means there are only so many pedantic responses to these things that can be made. Plus - all the complaining about posts and subject matter and comments is getting really fucking old. The old guard here is starting to move from 'vigilant defenders' to 'crotchety bureaucrats'.

It is funny how in PIttsburgh, if Casey was to get arrested or take drugs this would been blown in all the media. This man does some good and they either bury it or it is never told.

Suggestion: check assumptions like: It's such a shame how no one seems interested in an athlete when it's on the positive side. LBB, why not just stick to the topic at hand? You do have a busy week.
posted by BornIcon at 08:38 AM on May 17, 2007
Using his thread to start a fight makes Sean Casey cry. Also, what Weedy said. The number of comments is meaningless and will be thrown out of court if offered as evidence.

LBB, why not just stick to the topic at hand? You do have a busy week. Because you appeared to be getting yourself worked up about the lack of comments, rather than sticking to your own topic (physician, heal thyself?). My point was that there are many reasons for not responding, only one of which is not being "interested in an athlete when it's on the positive side". Clear now?

...you appeared to be getting yourself worked up about the lack of comments... Hmmm. Is that right? Do you not realize that I already pointed out that I was speaking about when yerfatma posted almost the same story 2 years ago? I love fishing but I'm not taking the bait. .

Sorry if that amounted to pissing in your cheerios, jeez. Why would you even try to make this about me? I could care less if you decided to post anything or not. My point was that when yerfatma posted the same story 2 years ago, the story was strongly overlooked. Sean Casey would roll over in his grave No shit, he died? What have we done?

My point was that when yerfatma posted the same story 2 years ago, the story was strongly overlooked. Dude, two years ago it was a different site, with a few thousand fewer members. Look at the June '05 archives. A post about George Steinbrenner got around a dozen comments. You make that same post today, you get 70 comments' worth of inane argument about the evil empire and the Yankees' payroll. I think you were just pissed off because your post was up for three hours with only two comments before you dropped the troll. Relax, man: this is not a race to see whose posts can garner the most comments.

Casey's awesome. I was piiiiiiiiissed when the Reds let him go. I guess you could make a case that his skills are diminishing, but I'd have him in the clbhouse anyday.

I think you were just pissed off because your post was up for three hours with only two comments before you dropped the troll. Relax, man: this is not a race to see whose posts can garner the most comments Yeah, that's it. I can believe the shit that comes out of peoples mouth's sometimes. Again, it had nothing to do with this story I posted, I was speaking about yerfatma's post. If it was on a different site, then my bad but dude, this has nothing to do with me. Show me exactly where I got, "pissed off because this post was up for three hours with only two comments."
