I agree with most of the choices TO definitely, Bonds is a no brainer, Busch no doubt, but Phil Mickelson? A pro fisher? Where is Artest going to fall? I think the authors need some performance enhancing drugs before they attempt another article.

Michael Iaconelli? Is bass fishing even a sport? Phil Mickelson? What, are Gargill and/or Penn stalking his wife or something? And yeah, no Artest? No Bertuzzi? No Spree? No Rocker? No Clemens?

posted by chicobangs at 11:12 AM on January 25, 2006

I'm totally going with the Phil Mickelson nomination -in fact, he should be higher on that list. The list isn't about who's an asshole, it's about who is hated by their peers - so Phil chould probably have been top of that list.

posted by JJ at 11:20 AM on January 25, 2006

I would like to disagree with bobrolloff, TO should not be #1. I mean it was very disrespectful the way he handled his problems with the Eagles' organization, but most famous athletes have had a falling out with their organization. At the very least, Owens should be #3. I can think of two athletes who are worse than him.

Phil Mickelson? What, are Gargill and/or Penn stalking his wife or something? It just goes to show media bias and how it influences the masses. I made the same comment in a Barry Bonds thread. Everyone HATES Barry. And really, what has Barry done? I'll tell you what he's done...he's treated the media like crap and they repay him by trashing him every chance they get. The sheep then fall in line and HATE the man worse than guys run over halloweeners, attack old men with golf clubs, or machete up their employees. That's all you hear about is how bad Barry is because that's all the media talks about. Yet guys like Mickelson, and Cal Ripken (who was one of the biggest asses in sports) are held as media darlings and because of that everyone thinks they're super people! Half the people on this list I had no idea they were as bad as presented simply because the media want us all to know how bad Terrel and Barry are.

posted by bdaddy at 11:27 AM on January 25, 2006

A side-bar in the magazine lists five honorable mentions: 1. Jeff Kent 2. Randy Johnson 3. Rasheed Wallace 4. A-Rod 5. Danny Fortson Artest, who appears to be a frontrunner for the SF top ten, doesn't even get honorable mention. I'm not a huge Ripken fan -- I lived in DC for a while and got tired of Tom Boswell kissing his butt -- but I've worked with the guy and he didn't seem all that bad. I did hear from a friend of mine who used to direct Royals baseball for TV that George Brett is the biggest horse's ass in sports, but having worked with him too I have nothing to confirm it.

posted by BullpenPro at 11:29 AM on January 25, 2006

Mickelson's no saint but I always thought Vijay was the biggest jackass in the PGA.

Danny Fortson as an honorable mention?! Who the fuck is Danny Fortson? Career averages of 20 min/game, 7 reb/game, and 8 pts/game should make you ineligible for a list of this sort.

All top 10 lists are skewed towards who voted or were polled for it. This particular list is supposed to be the feelings of the athletes/competitors' peers not the general public. I am sure if everyone here at Spofi made a top 10 list of most hated athletes, they would all be different. I personally found the article quite good, nice link dbt302. :o)

posted by Steeler_Fan at 11:51 AM on January 25, 2006

Don't worry about Maddux - he'll always be #1 in our hearts. Is there anyone else who can consistently throw 200 above average innings, play gold glove defense, and knock off a hooker every other road trip? We all know the editors were afraid of including him anyways.

posted by mbd1 at 11:54 AM on January 25, 2006

Not one mention of the dirtiest and most hated player in the NFL, Bill Romanowski! Romanowski has been involved in numerous altercations with both teammates and opponents. In 1989, while with the 49ers, he brawled with offensive tackle Harris Barton after Barton had taken exception to a hit Romanowski had made on wide receiver Jerry Rice during a practice session. In 1995, while with the Eagles, he was ejected from a game — and subsequently fined $4,500 — for kicking Arizona Cardinals running back Larry Centers in the head. Three more incidents occurred during the 1997 season while he played for the Broncos: In the first, he was fined $20,000 after his hit on then-Carolina Panthers quarterback Kerry Collins in a preseason game resulted in Collins sustaining a broken jaw that kept him out of action that entire season; in the second, Romanowski spat in the face of 49ers wide receiver J.J. Stokes in a regular-season game played in December on a Monday night; and in the third — in the AFC Championship game — Romanowski almost precipitated a full-scale brawl after he taunted Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart following an interception Stewart had thrown in the third quarter of the game, won by Denver. Two years later, while still with the Broncos, he was fined a total of $42,500 for three illegal hits plus a punch thrown at Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, and was also fined an undisclosed amount for throwing a football at Bryan Cox of the New York Jets, the ball hitting him in the crotch area. And no votes for the Ty Cobb of the modern era!? Sosa was notorious for monopolizing the music in the locker room (it's normally the custom in the majors for the team's starting pitcher that day to select the music that is played in the locker room). He would superstitiously play pop music deemed undesirable by most of his teammates or salsa music at a very high volume, often refusing to turn it down (even on one occasion when then-teammate Joe Girardi was suffering from a migraine). Though unconfirmed, reliable sources have stated that catcher Michael Barrett, following up on a suggestion by pitcher Kerry Wood, destroyed the boombox with a bat. That action was viewed as symbolic of the end of Sosa's era with the Cubs.

However; I agree with the comment that the media has a big influence on who the general people adore and hate. I am from Missouri and two of the biggest names in sports from this state are supposed to be first rate jerks...Ozzie Smith and George Brett. As far as the list...How does a bass fisher get on there. Just like guys that are supposedly "bad" can have things portrayed to make them appear much worse than they are. And which way the public views them is usually based on how the media portrays them.

It's a well known fact to some of the people on SpoFi that publicly-acknowledged super-nice-guy Greg Maddux has a very dark and disturbing alternate personae. It's been reported by SpoFi members that he has killed hookers, jammed needles into puppies' eyes, punched nuns and taken all the candy from kids that visit his house on Hallowe'en. The fact that this is the first time you've heard of it can be attributed to a very calculated media campaign to keep his image as clean as possible.

Joey -- with respect to Greg Maddux, when you get a chance, go read Derrek Lee's autobiography about the 2005 season, "Chasing the Triple Crown." He refers to a teammate "G.M." who hid his stash of meth in Jeromy Burnitz's rectum (at gunpoint, I should add) to avoid getting busted at O'Hare, resulting in Burnitz missing five games for what was publicly stated by the team to be turf toe but what everyone on the inside really knew to be meth burn in the ass cavity.

Holden, check your facts. I didn't read the book, but the way I heard it Lee was referring to GM Jim Hendry, who was going to try to use the meth in an effort to get a center fielder from Giants GM Brian Sabean, reportedly Alex Sanchez. Also, I believe Burnitz's injury was written off as "flu-like symptoms." This story has nothing to do with Greg Maddux.

And Tom Brady, come on he is the posterchild for the NFL because of his great personality and his ability to sell himself. It would perhaps be significant to mention that NASCAR racing is not a sport, but entertainment, like pro wrestling. Even though pro wrestlers are more athletes than ANY auto driver from any age. I'd also beg to differ about fishing being a sport in the fact that some of the world's biggest lazy fatasses are fishermen(women). It's hard to imagine where sports and entertainment got so far spread apart, but it started around the time ESPN began. Poker, fishing, auto racing, and others too numerous to mention cannot really be considered, but there you have it, and we are stuck with it. But most of the list is right on the money, but they forgot quite a slew of NHL assholes, most of which are incorporated in the lists above.

9. Rick Flair Too damn funny. Oddly enough, there is no mention of Pete Rose or Randy Moss. Everyone seems to have such a strong opinion about what Pete and Randy have done. Just goes to show that people hate the crybaby type athletes more than the unethical types. Its like saying being unethical doesn't bother you that much, but being a big mouth crybaby does. For example, T.O hasn't committed any crimes or been arrested at all and he is very high on the lists. To the contrary Pete Rose and Randy Moss have been unethical, dishonest, and arrested respectively. I think this proves that we as society will put up with unethical, dishonest, and illegal behavior (Moss, Rose), but we HATE a big mouth crybaby that hasn't gambled on his sport, smoked weed, driven down the street with a metermaid strapped to his bumper, or committed any type of act that is deemed illegal. Does this mean we hate arrogance more than illegal activity?

Shane Warne 3. Greg Norman 4. Nathan Buckley (AFL), and 5. Jana Pittman's knee. JJ or some other golf nut out there - isn't Nick Faldo ahead of people like Montgomerie, Mickelson or Singh? And chico - which Ronaldo? The Man Utd one I'd agree with, the Real Madrid one I have not hated since Suzanna Werner dumped him.

What's the deal? I scrolled through seven pages of sports drivel regarding the most hated athletes in sports and nowhere did I find the mention of the most distasteful person in all of sports, Sammy "I am sorry" Sosa. He said he was sorry when he got caught corking his bat and uttered the same after failing to cut out the heart of Rod Barahas as B,Rod tagged him out at home plate during the past season. Second place goes to the Major League management buttwipes who failed to even recognize Sosa's "gesture" as the most classless in all of sports. On the subject of classless in sports, I feel better that Bill Romanowski was mentioned.

As a loyal Giants fan, I have to protest the Barry Bonds selection. I'm sure he comes off as egotistical, short with the press, or a pain in the ass sometimes. However, he is arguably the best player ever in baseball history, so he deserves to have some ego. I don't think his ego is over blown. Second he is the victim of more "yellow" journalism than anyone I have seen in some time. Who can blame him for being a occaisionally short tempered with the press. I know if I were in his place, I would have a hard time dealing with all of the negative comments directed his way. He is clean cut. He is hard working. He gives his best when he is on the field. He seems to try to be a good father to his kids. And best of all he is a loyal Giant fan and San Franciscan himself. Remember he turned down more money (perhaps almost double his salary) to stay in San Francisco. There are a lot of good traits about this guy.

The only people that have a bad thing to say about him are British armchair critics who never played the game. If you can find one -- just one -- professional rugby player that has played with-or-against Mealamu that has anything bad to say about him, I'll publish a story about it, 'cos it's news to me. Everyone acknowledges Mealamu is a little battleship who punches above his weight, that he sacrifices everything and plays hard, but at the end of the day his opponents respect him as a fair and clean player. I don't know that we've even seen his temper raised on a playing field. Maybe you're thinking about Danny Grewcock or Simon Shaw or former Australian rugby league international John "fingers" Hopoate.
