Eagles Give T.O. a Season-Ending Timeout: PHILADELPHIA - Terrell Owens can take his touchdowns and dance somewhere else. The tempestuous star receiver won't return to the Philadelphia Eagles this season — or probably ever — "a result of a large number of situations that accumulated over a long period of time," coach Andy Reid said Monday.

I think I read somewhere that TO has a lot of money. If that's true, he probably won't need to get a real job.

T.O. probably has lots of money. But so did Mike Tyson and MC Hamster at one time. The NFL network keeps going to live shots outside T.O.'s ugly monster home in New Jersey, I guess they expect he'll say something.

How much does it set T.O. back as a player to not compete for a year? This could be a big setback for him as a major offensive force. Well, I mean, I'm sure he'll still be offensive, but not in the way that counts.

Good move by the Eagles sitting him for 4 games without pay. Probably mark him as inactive after that...so I would drop him from my fantasy team.

T.O.'s going to have to take a job with the Raiders at a salary below his worth, simply because there will be no bidding war, he's a liability and teams will not offer him a contract. The dude is a cancer in the locker room, and if teams want to waste a big chunk of their restricted salary cap on a wide-receiver, that team's fans will not be happy unless they are Raider fans (and we know how well they like to spend on high-priced receivers for a 4-12 season).

posted by the red terror at 05:25 PM on November 07, 2005

If Owens goes to the Raiders and if Moss and Owens decide to co-exist (two big ifs), I think they'll do a little better than 4-12. That combo is just absurd. I really hope that's what happens. It would self-destruct at some point, but for a few games at least, it would be amazing.

posted by panoptican at 05:31 PM on November 07, 2005

TO's going to miss more than half the season, and he still will probably end up leading Eagle wide receivers (maybe even the entire team) in reception yardage for the full season. McNabb says team will be better off without him. Hard to see. His issues and problems are mostly off field, but on the field he seemed to be able to put it behind him and play well. There are teams willing to live with that. But not at the salary that he and his "agent" think he deserves.

I can't wait until TO has to suit up and play his former teammates. My prediction is either TO will come up with an injury and won't play or the Eagles rip his head off. The guy is a beaatch!

posted by bburrell33212121 at 06:14 PM on November 07, 2005

A suspension and deactivation means that he won't be playing anywhere for the rest of this season. He still has another 6 years worth of contract with the Eagles, so he can't pull the free agent FU he did to the Niners. Philly can trade him to the worst team in the league or even send him to NFL Europe if they feel like it. TO and Moss with the Raiders? That would last exactly one game before those two would be slapping each other. Both the Niners and the Eagles were willing to give up a franchise player for the sake of the health of the franchise. Any owner or coach that signs this jerk should have their head examined. I think TO would be better off working at Circuit City with Artest.

posted by irunfromclones at 06:25 PM on November 07, 2005

It's about danm time. T.O. should have never been alowed on the field after his antics at the begining of the season. It wouldn't hurt my feelings any to never see or hear of T.O. again.

posted by Doc at 06:44 PM on November 07, 2005

This basically amounts to Owens being fired. He's not playing anywhere else this year, and next year is a whole nother deal. He'll have to sign on under a microscope somewhere with a one-year deal for peanuts. He will get offers. Don't judge those teams too harshly in the off-season.

Top 10 things Terrell Owens can do now: 10. Become a Carolina Panthers cheerleader. 9. Watch replays of his 100th touchdown for hours on end. 8. Wear an Eagles green "I'm an idiot" T-shirt. 7. Sell Sharpies. 6. Start a Mama McNabb soup franchise. 5. Stitch his mouth closed. 4. Run for office. Politicians always have foot-in-mouth disease. 3. Flash Nicollette Sheridan. 2. Stand on a streetcorner with a sign "Will pout for food." And the number one thing Terrell Owens can do now: 1. Grow up.

Or can he still end up somewhere else? You may already know by now, but yes, drop him. He's doomed to nothing on the Eagles' bench, regardless of the union's battles. Those are strictly salary. Like everyone says, on the he's great, its off of it that seems to just bring out the worst in him. Can you really compare Randy and T.O.? I hate that, was Randy really the problem in Minnesota, I think they are having way more problems this year and Randy isnt even on that side of the country anymore, IMHO.

I've had my fill of TO (or at least the TO story) -- the Hugh Douglas fight put me over the edge -- but let's not mistake this for a victory of principle on the Eagles' part. Philly wouldn't do this if it didn't know, slam-dunk, that public opinion would be on its side. The team gets a hall pass for 2006 for turning a Super Bowl possibility into a rebuilding year, because they can just put everything on TO.

As was said above, if any network picks up T.O. to be on their pregame show, etc., they should be reprimanded. When Keyshawn was sent home by Tampa, the next week he was sitting on one of the network shows. That's a bunch of crap, but, obviously, a move only meant to garner the almighty ratings and viewers. It still doesn't make it right. The guy would benefit most from being kept out of the spotlight with no attention being paid to his stupid antics.

And it could get even worse for T.O. According to the NFL Network: Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports Philadelphia Eagles WR Terrell Owens has a clause in his contract where he must repay a portion of his signing bonus if he's suspended for more than one game. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Eagles are going after $1.8 million of his signing bonus.

I want to start out by saying, I don't see how anyone could defend TO's actions this season. He deserves his suspension without a doubt. However, that does not mean there is no hope for TO. A couple of people have compared this incident with Keyshawn's in Tampa (not that Keyshawn was ever as bad as TO), but Tampa was not the end for Keyshawn. Once he went to Dallas he did quite well with behaviour on and off the field. TO could still get it together and have a fine career, or he could be the Mike Tyson of football. His fate has not yet been decided.

Philly can trade him to the worst team in the league or even send him to NFL Europe if they feel like it. When I stopped chuckling at the prospect of T.O. being directed to go play for the Amsterdam Admirals or the Frankfurt Galaxy, I started wondering what the contract mechanics of this would be. Would this constitute a trade? Would the Eagles be obliged to pay him anything beyond what the NFL Europe team would? So, which team is going to take a chance on this locker room cancer next year? Everybody keeps talking about the Raiders, who are notorious for prima donnas and disciplinary "problem children," but I'm kinda guessing that Phoenix will want to talk to his agent. The Cards seem to have this wacky rep for throwing too much money at marquee players instead of honestly trying to build a winner from the ground up.

posted by dzot at 08:58 AM on November 09, 2005

Some of us are trying to forget, dzot. Seriously, as a hardcore Pats fan, I was...well, kinda glad to see it happen. For one thing, the Pats tend to straighten out after they get whupped (although this year, unlike in years past, I think it's not so much getting their heads straight -- I think they know what to do -- it's having the experienced, healthy players to do it). More important, though, I think the Colts are deserving. They're a helluva good team and they don't deserve this friggin' albatross that's been hung on them by idjits who just look at the W-L and the final score and don't pay attention. After the results of recent years, I'm sure there are plenty of pinheads who think the Colts are a pushover. I'd like the Pats to win, but if they do, I want them to get the respect they deserve for beating a good team, and the only way that happens is if that team gets plenty of respect too.

I think the Pats would have a pretty fair shot if they play the Colts in the playoffs. Manning had to complete some low-percentage chances to get the W. The final score was deceptive in my opinion, either team could have won.

posted by Bill Lumbergh at 10:37 AM on November 09, 2005

My hope for the Pats is that Rodney Harrison is so incensed by the score run-up and Bill Polian's antics in the press box (esp. suggesting the Colts defense should try to break Doug Flutie's leg simply because the Pats ran a play with 3 seconds left) that he flies to Lourdes and comes back mean. Like Lourdes mixed with a Pet Semetary sort of thing.

The key moment in the colts-pats game was when Indy forced a fumble after a manning turnover. In past games, brady would have scored making it 14-14, and Manning woud have gotten jittery and the Colts would have gone three and out. As soon as we recovered Brady's fumble I knew we were gonna win. I still don't know about a Super Bowl. Some teams just bring it, and they have an attitude and a swagger and an intensity that in some ways is evern more important than skill. The Steelers have it. The Pistons had it. The Pacers had it a few years back. The Colts don't. The single best piece of sports analysis in my opinion this year was some ESPN article where a guy pointed out that Peyton isn't at his best when they need him - he's at his best when the Colts are up 10 and the defense forces a punt. He gets in a groove and is deadly. We'll see if that changes as the season progresses.
