New Logo: for the Pheonix coyotes. I know unis are a favorite topic around here, so chime in and lets see what peeps think.
Dunno really since the old one wasn't there for comparison. I tend to prefer the shield/badge look of Engish football teams. Just what I'm used to I suppose.

Personally, I don't like it...still, it's not Anaheim 95-96 3rd Jersey, Kings 95-96 3rd Jersey or Canucks (pick a year) Jersey bad. Really, it seems like a lateral move in my mind. They've exchanged one cartoonish logo for another. At least the old logo had the merit of being distinctive with its SouthWestern flavour.

salmacis, here's the old one for comparison. It's definitely not a traditional shield/badge jersey, very few are over here, but the old one was too busy and contrived for my taste.

These gus need to win something before I care what particular coyote they want to look like. Best unis in NHL - Red Wings, Flyers, Leafs, Avalanche, Canadiens. IMHO.

I do like it more, although I do have misgivings, as juan pointed out, with the loss of distinctive Southwest-ness. That said, the old one was fairly clumsy. My only question is why did they do this? The Coyotes have even been there for that long, so it's not like the old logo was stagnant. Was there a major fan demand for change?

erm, haven't even been there that long. But you probably could've inferred that.

logo is an improvement but my first impression had me thinking of the logo for the Minnesota Wild which also has a wolf type thing going on. jerseys look good though. the stylized logo is too slick for the classic lines for me to get too excited about it but all in all an improvement over what they had. and salamacis - some of the football logos are pretty decent BUT the actual jerseys are covered in advertising and seem to change, in some way, every damn year. old style football strips look pretty smart in some old pics I have seen.

and if the discussion is headed to jerseys in general the Toronto Blue Jays just introduced a new logo. no more red, no more maple leaf and now just Jays thank you very much. It looks kind of '5 years ago' with sort of a post-teal kind of blue (which, I think, is closer to the colour of an actual blue jay). The unveiling: Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey introduced a laser light show from a helicopter above SkyDome between the fifth and sixth innings. The light show reflected off the roof of SkyDome and was shown on the Jumbotron, but the Jumbotron lost the feed at one point and fans booed after being unable to clearly see what was being reflected.

I think I like these, though I can't decide for sure. They're definitely simpler than the majority of new outfits coming out in this day and age, which is a good thing. That said, the Coyotes weren't the first team in line for a re-design. I kinda liked their old ones. Weedy, no love for the Rangers? They're classy, even if the team sucks it. Oh, and before Sammy says it, the spoked B in Beantown ain't too shabby either.

Somehow the facing-up coyote head is less fiersome than say the sharks logo. Kind of seems like you're looking down on it, like an annoying little dog.

I like it. The old one was sensory overload, although it had a certain charm. The simpler the better if you ask me. Don't like the Jays one. I thought the 'T' logo was better. Now the real question: are logo/jersey changes a sign of desperation?

86, no comment on the similarity between the avs and rangers laced, down-angled lettered jerseys?

I hate it. Why don't they just go ahead and give props to the most famous coyote of all-time.

My other alma mater: A Nike representative said the revisions keep Oregon "on the cutting edge" of design and improvements of uniforms, though the changes will "eventually be rolled out to other schools." Other schools...beware, lest you look like the Ducks.

Now the real question: are logo/jersey changes a sign of desperation? Desparate? No. Greedy? Yes. My personal opinion is that some teams (those who aren't constantly at the top of their respective leagues) change their colors and logos (and sometimes even their names) occasionally in order to drum up more merchandise purchases by fans.

garfield, I've ranted on the Avs rip off here before. I guess I didn't feel the need to comment on it again. Plus, just thinking about it makes my blood boil. Argh.

86 - yes much love for the Rangers and Bruins - except the Bruins no longer qualify because of the worst third jersey of all-time. Spoked B is a classic. Yellow is classic too. Fucking bear. Any team with a tie-up works too - but not if your like the Wild, and have an adjective as your name. It's a descriptor people! (And yes I am aware that being lost is occassionally referred to as "being in the wild"). Name sucks, team boring - no love for you and all your filthy Gaboriks!

Over the summer they unveiled new jerseys for both Glasgow Celtic and Rangers and the sports shops had signs that were all like "Get your 03/04 Celtic Away strip here!" so I presume they change them every year or nearly every year. When you have a rabid fan base that you can wring money out of by changing your jersey a little bit then hey, i guess it is a business after all. And I guess it doesn't hurt to have such a heated rivalry between Celtic and Rangers in the same city where wearing your team's shirt is the height of fashio for some. I've read that Celtic makes over £10m a year in merchandising and they know that if you have one jersey you don't need another one until you see, hey, this season the away strip is in black!

I think there should be a rule that once you pick a logo, you stick with that logo. No changing logos unless you change names or move to a new city. If you do change your logo, every fan who owns merchandise with the old logo on it gets to punch the owner in the neck. Maybe teams would put more thought into what they’re doing that way. All the logo changes get ridiculous after a while. Weedy, I actually own one of those Bruins third jerseys.

That yellow Oregon Ducks uniform is hilarious on TV. It looks like the Ducks are wearing reflective colors to avoid being hit by cars.

I like how they kept the four triangles on the nose. (Sort of like Chevrolet keeping the triangular tail-lights when they re-vamped the Camaro in 1982: a bit of near-subliminal consistency.) But that's all I like about it. I liked the old Phoenix design; this one looks too generic, with a 1950s feel. I hope Sean Burke keeps last year's face mask: the cubist dog lining up for a face-off in the desert night, the constellations of Hendrix and Page in the Arizona sky. Burke makes Richter and Brodeur look like Phillistines in comparison. And the Jays airbrushing the red Maple Leaf? Ghastly. Unforgiveable.

I dunno, I kinda like the new logo as opposed to the previous logo that was a cubist coyote playing hockey. This new logo looks like a dead coyote head. All it needs now is a tongue hanging out of its mouth. I can hear the graphic artist pitching this logo: "I was wandering through the Arizona desert, tripping on peyote, when I came across this coyote head. Bam! New logo for your hockey club, man."

I thought the reason the European soccer jersey's sold new jerseys each year was because they changed advertisers. And because of that point (advertising on the jersey) I think anyone that likes "football" jerseys in Europe has ZERO respect from me as to what makes a good/bad sports jersey. That said, my quick takes on the new jerseys: Coyotes - good logo, good jerseys Blue Jays - great logo (love the bird), colours are bit busy, jerseys are a bit blah (expecting to see some red piping on the arms) I don't mind that they got rid of the maple leaf. If you don't know that Toronto is a Canadian city by now...

Coyotes: thumbs down. There's just something that seems off with it, and I don't like the red of the jerseys -- again, it doesn't seem very Phoenix Coyote-ish. Then again, I didn't like the old logo much either... but this one is hardly an improvement, IMO.

To start, its an improvement. The jerseys themselves look pretty good too. Very old-school. Here's the official news release.
