Are Fans Still Allowed To Boo?: More and more athletes are slamming fans for their booing. Even Sammy Sosa! Good column on when to boo and when not to boo, and some funny jokes after that rant. For example: "Cell phone maker Nextel has replaced R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as the sponsor of NASCAR’s championship series. Racing officials also announced this week that brain had replaced lung as the Official Cancer of NASCAR…"

Great link -- this guy's hilarious. I thought at first it was a column in some daily newspaper, until I got to this line: "Yet he expects fans to vocally fellate him every game?"

(off-color) Then there’s Corky Sosa. I first read that as a reference to the character from Life Goes On that had down syndrome, Corky. I've always thought that Sammy looked like he had DS. It's rude, I know, but it's true and he can handle it. (/off-color) As far as booing, it does dishearten me to hear a crowd boo their own home team after a bad loss, or a string of successive losses (then again, most people present at the games show some kind of jackassitude or another so I shouldn't be surprised). That said, I know how they feel and understand where they're coming from. Myself, I wouldn't do it, but the guy next to me can all he wants. The only thing I'll boo audibly is a bad call by the ref, althought I do find something very snippy and condescending about the "European whistle" that has a little more effect to it than booing. Oh, and I didn't like everything this guy wrote, but "Am I the only one who thinks Courtney Love has more purity than sports?" is a fucking brilliant line.

"jackassitude" also wins points.

I think booing is incredibly tacky. These guys train for months and months, put their bodies on the line game in and game out and for someone to boo a bad performance is pretentious behaviour on the part of the fans. Think about it; at the office, would you like it if your boss booed you for having a bad day? These people are humans, you know, not machines. They do have feelings, no matter how much they might show otherwise.

Hmmm.... Booing is a uniquely American expression Errrr, I'm afraid not. And you wonder why we’re stuck fighting all the wars ourselves? Well, thanks a bundle. That aside, fans have the right to express themselves how they like (within reason). Personally, I've never booed my own team as I think it's counter-productive. The worst I'll manage is stony faced silence and a nasty glare. The opposition though are fair game.
